How many days of cardio is needed to lose fat?

I still have 53 lbs to go and am burrrrrnnnning out on exercise. I"ve been doing 6 days of cardio and 1-2 days of light resistance training for almost 3 months, and I want to revamp my workout routine because I'm getting bored with it. Was thinking of doing 2 days of running (2.5 miles each time) and 2 days of 45 minute Turbofire, plus 2 days of weight training and 2 days of abs. Does this, paired with a tight clean diet, sound like it do the trick?
Is it possible to lose fat without cardio? I love it once I'm doing it, but the whole part leading up just stinks. LOL...

From my understand cardio is good and needed, but Muscle training is equally important. maybe concentrate on that a bit more and do a little less cardio?0

Anything goes! You could do something different everyday, cardio is cardio in my opinion. As you get strong, run farther, and go longer if you want, but do things you enjoy! I agree with the previous poster, weight training is very important. Not to mention the more muscle you have the more you burn at rest
Maybe find someone to work out with to keep you going?!0 -
As long as it takes - to burn one pound of fat you need deficit of 3500 Kilo Calories. The rest is arithmetica. If will be eating like a pig, no exercise will justify the excess.0

You need to do both if you want to look great, feel great, and be healthy. Don't be afraid to mix it up. Try adding in some new stuff--tennis or raquetball might be a good one since they are very active and let you interact with others, or maybe swimming now that the weather is warming up.0

Try swapping your current cardio for HIIT - (interval training). Less time, more intense, more effective for fat burning.
Check out www.intervaltraining.net - it tells you all you need to know about it and even gives you a plan to follow   :happy:0 -
To answer the original question, cardio is not needed to lose fat. Cardio is great for your health but diet is far more important for body composition.0

Concentrate more on doing heavy weights that are challenging than light resistance. You will build more muscle and turn your body into a fat burning machine. On cardio days, do HIIT. Sprints and interval training, whether you're outside, on a treadmill, elliptical, or bike, just do something that ramps your heart up for 30 secs-3 mins then slow it down for a period of time to recover.. do it again. Repeat and increase time as you progress.0

I usually do cardio 3 days a week and weight training 3 days a week. In my opinion, and from what I've read on here, they're both equally important so I try to do every other day. If for some reason I'm not going to make it to the gym 6 days I will condense and do 30 minutes of cardio and then my normal weight routine. I haven't noticed the scale moving as much as I'd like it to, but I'm definitely losing inches.
Have you considered adding in something like a zumba class to count as your cardio? That would burn tons of calories and allow you to get the most out of your workouts without being bored.0 -
I'd say if your able, trying lift a few heavier weights. That will really change up your routine and make you feel the "burn" more.
Also try switching up your cardio.. If you normally run on the treadmill, try walking at a high incline and high speed instead. I never run, so thats what I normally do.
I also do about two days of weight lifting and about two days of cardio.. three if I go to the gym 5 days a week.0 -
Some research shows that people who lose weight and keep it off for more than 2 years regularly do 200-300 of cardio a week. That's the habit I've been trying to build.0

Great article on that link. Thanks0

The kind of "cardio" and intensity will have more of an affect than how often. Running/Elliptical, for example, is not intense cardio (I love running; I know I'll catch flack for this). Try something like squat thrusts + mountain climbers + squat jumps. You'll be amazed at how much more you feel these. Your heart rate will rocket. Keeping that HR up will help you burn fat/calories. Here's a video (heads up: the guy is selling a program, but the video is worth the watch): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkD9LwDBWW0
I do very little cardio (still run a couple miles once a week and warm up with cardio), but I've managed to lose fat. I used to dedicate 2-3 days a week to cardio. Just my experiences.0 -
I know people who just do weight training and still lose. But they are so absolutely particular with everything they put in their mouths and it's far too confusing. Easier to run, LOL.0

Wow - all of this info is so interesting, guys, thanks! I am definitely intrigured with the HIIT idea, although I've tried TurboFire HIIT workouts and generally do not like them. But running HIIT fashion I would consider.
I am always afraid to switch things up because I have set a personal record this time with my fitness - Normally in the past, I drop about 25-30 lbs by starving myself, in about a month and a half I peak and start gaining it back, then by 3 months I am right back where I started. So, when I start feeling burned out, I get really really scared that its going to happen again, and I am holding on for dear life right now because I do NOT intend to gain this 32 lbs back and I fully INTEND to lose 53 more and KEEP IT OFF forever this time. I have really taken a different approach to weight loss this time than I ever have. Thanks to MFP. I really really love MFP and all of you guys.0 -

My opinion is to skip the light weight training and do some serious lifting! Then for your cardio, focus on interval training (HIIT) instead of a steady pace. You can do MUCH shorter workouts and get all the benefits and more! Eat enough protein and don't leave yourself with too high of a calorie deficit.
I know how hard it is to change up your routine. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!0 -

Ok - you sound pretty sure of this advice - specifically, what should one eat, or not eat?0 -
I don't think anyone has suggested this yet but why not try combining the two with a class like Body Pump? Although it's a weight training class you do a high number of reps which makes it more of a cardio workout than just normal weight training. I wear a hrm and I burn the same number of calories in a Body Pump class as in a spinning class.0

This ^, along with the other similar statements.
I never had a problem being active when I weighed 340 lbs. I didn't start losing any weight till I started counting calories and paying more attention to what I ate.0 -
Obviously what you eat matters..... I don't think anyone would suggest excercise without changing your diet to lose weight. And it is correct - technically you do not have to excercise to lose weight. I guess it just depends on what your goals are and where you want to end up at. If you change only your diet, chances are high that you will lose a lot of muscle and therefore your metabolism will slow and you'll have a hard time keeping any lost weight off. And chances are also high that eventually you'll probably go back to your old un-healthy habits and with all the lost muscle and lean tissues, you'll be potentially worse off than before.
What do you want your less-fat body to look like, and do you want to maintain it? I, personally, want to be lean, and I definetly want to maintain my loss, so I choose to combine diet with excercise (especially weight training - which I wish I'd have done right away instead of waiting until I'd lost 70 pounds to start). I'm not arguing that what you eat isn't important - it most definetly is extremely important. What I am suggesting is that you probably don't want to skip excercise - depending on your goals, of course.0 -
I think I have asked this before, but, do the Turbo Fire classes count towards any type of resistance training? There is so much punching and kicking, I just wonder. Especially if I wear the hand weights? Someone mentioned body pump, so I wonder if Turbo Fire is similiar at all.
Maybe I need to look into circuit training... hmm...0 -

My goals DEFINITELY go beyond just losing weight on the scale. I want to feel strong, I want the endurance to run up stairs without being winded, or to walk in an amusement park for hours and not feel like dying. I love that when I dash across the parking lot in the rain, by the time I get to the mall, I am not breathing any harder, my heart is not pounding, etc. This is a result of TurboFire 6 times a week for the past 3 months.
I also LOVE that I have exercise to combat any indulgences I may have. When I know there is a big meal coming up, I love that I can do some extra cardio to allow me that occasional treat - it makes me feel like I am really in control of the diet end of things instead of me constantly feeling powerless over everything I put in my mouth (this how I've spent years feeling.)
So, my goals are fitness oriented not just weight loss - however - I really do want the weight to come off, also.
I'll definitely continue some kind of exercise program - I just feel burnt out, and probably sound that way too.0
