So I had a moment of weakness this past week... well maybe I need to back up a little further in my story, After I got married, we found that we had a TON of hersey's kisses left over, and by ton I mean probably 200...:grumble:

Well I told my husband that this was the last week they were going to remain in our house, I was tired of having three or four or five or 10 each day, they are hindering my weight loss efforts, and if the food is in my house I have no self control. GREAT self control if its at the store, or somewhere else, but the moment it comes into my house I HAVE to eat it.

Well this week my sister came over for dinner, and in an attempt to get rid of them, we had hot chocolate and we melted kisses in the hot chocolate for dessert. I have NEVER eaten so much chocolate in one sitting, and when I stood up I got a serious sugar rush, followed by a headache, followed by a sugar coma. I went to bed because i was in so much pain, and then the next day I got the flu or something, I was sick to my stomach, felt like I was going to throw up, I was having digestive issues (we will leave it at that) and I could barely eat anything. I couldn't get out of bed because my body hurt soo darn bad! Well two days past and I was pretty much over what ever I had. Well on sunday, our sunday school teacher at church passed around a basket of little chocolates. I had a reeses egg. And well, sunday night I was sick all over again, granted not as sick as before, but the same issues all over again.

So my question is this... Is it even possible to develop an allergy by over eating on it? Could I really be allergic to Chocolate.

The answer I want to hear is no... lol as this will destroy my life. :brokenheart: But Please be honest.

I used to be a total chocolate freak and for some reason all those cravings left about 4 years ago. I don't even like it anymore at all. If I do eat any, I feel yucky the next day, am cloudy headed, spacey, and just feel lousy. So now I don't touch it.

Maybe you might have gotten sick from something else. Hopefully thats what it was. Worse case senario you might be allergic to peanuts. Those kisses are made in a factory that has peanuts. I have heard people cant even be around the dust from peanuts.

Can you develop an allergy to peanuts later in life.. I have never had any allergy of any sort, and peanuts and peanut butter are some of my favorite things.

You can DEVELOP allergies to almost anything.
Overindulging may make you ill just because your body is telling you it doesn't like it.
There is no doubt you can have TOO MUCH of a good thing.

All of my kids are allergic to chocolate. They don't get sick like that but instead just get REALLY bad eczema that is very painful. It was set off when they ate a lot of chocolate and now when they eat a little of it the eczema flairs back up. I have never heard of the stomach issues with being allergic to it. Hope you get feeling better!

Food allergies and sensitivities suck. I’m allergic to chocolate, dairy and wheat (possibly corn as well) and have to be careful about what I eat and how much of each thing I consume at a time. An ice cream cone or a bowl of cereal will send me into a body racking coughing fit accompanied with a sinus head ache and runny nose. Loads of fun I tell ya.

I’ve found that eating healthier has made me more sensitive to sugars than I previously was. I’ll get the sick to the stomach feeling and my body will just feel run down for the day after consuming refined sugar products. Maybe this is the case for you as well.

You could try consuming smaller amounts of chocolate and see how that feels in your system. The darker chocolates have less sugar so may be a better choice. Allergies and food sensitivities can develop later in life. If you are truly concerned about allergies it is always best to consult a physician and get an allergy test.

I doubt it was an allergy. I have gotten sick after eating too much junk before. I think too much sugar lowers your immune system.

It might be from all the sugar. It can really mess with you if you haven't eaten that much in awhile. Trust me, I know this to be true lol.
I hope you are feeling better!! :flowerforyou:

Ye syou can most deifnitely develop an allergy later in life. My Dad had to be taken to the ER 7 years ago because he had a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast and he normally had that a couple times a week if not more then all of a sudden he became very allergic. He was in his late fifties. He did not believe that doctors so he decide a year later to do the same thing and sure enough had the same reaction. :ohwell: That's my dad for you. Has to prove everything to himslef.

In College, a couple of friends and I were going on a hike for the day and we always made pb and PB&J sandwiches to bring for lunch. My girlfriend Judy and I were making them then all of a sudden she was having problems breathing Thank God we lived only a block away from the Hospital. Drove her to the ER and yeap she develop a severe allergy to Peanut. Thank God we weren't in the wilderness when that happened.

Moral of these stories, allergy can develop at anytime. Our bodies changes every seven years. Don't risk it . Go see an allergist and they can do all these test to determine exactly what you are allergic to. It may not be chocalate per say pershaps something else.

Yes you can develop allergies at any time. Although chocolate is not one of the common food allergens. My guess would be that it is more of an intolerance, than an actual allergy. I would definitely check with an allergist though.

I'm starting the Feingold (allergen elimination) diet with my daughter over the next few weeks. It can help with ADHD, ODD, autism, etc...

There are only certain chocolates allowed. Common ones like Hershey's are not allowed, containing one or more of the offending allergens.

I think it's quite possible that you've developed an allergy, but don't fear; maybe it's only to certain chocolates.
  • The sickness is most likey NOT an allergy. You may be more sensitive to chocolates/sweets now than previous. Or it's an ingredient in the chocolates. Food allergies tend to cause other symptoms (swelling, itching, etc.). Food sensitivities tend to make you sick.

You can develop allergies at any time. My aunt is allergic to peanuts now even though her entire life she was never allergic to them.

The only way to know for sure if you allergic, is to get tested. Be ready for an hour of needle pricking & itching that you CAN'T scratch. It's fun times.

<--Allergic to lots of stuff. Fortunately no food allergies.

Yes you can get an allergy to peanuts later in life. That also goes for shell fish. My mother became allergic to shell fish at the age of 60.
