Hurt Myself w/ 30Day Shred

Hi
I was doing 30 Day Shred this morning and while doing the squats and back strength training move ( I think it is circuit 2 on the level 1) I got this piercing pain that shot all across my abdomin, pelvic area. It was terrible!!! I dropped the weights (5lbs) immediately and laid on the floor for about an hour. It was too painful to move. I couldn't finish the work out.
I am not posting this to deter anyone from doing the Shred, rather, to get some help for myself. If you want to do Shred- Shred on!! If you have done it with no problems and got great results - I really think that is wonderful. I happen to LOVE Jillian's Shred video. I am actually a little dissapointed that I may not be able to continue. I was on day 8 level one, and looking forward to starting level 2.
I didn't stretch before working out , I did the warm up that she does. I will say that whenever I have done a workout video in the past or any kind of aerobics class I end up hurt, which says to me I must be doing the moves wrong. While I am doing the exercises, I always think I am doing them right, but I guess not. I keep giving a new program a shot because I thought well maybe it was just too hard.
I have lost 40 pounds before just doing the Crossramp and strength training. I really was just trying to add a challenge and switch up my routine so my body doesn't get use to just one workout.
I think I am going to stop Jillian, though I REALLY do not want to. I just think it is a smart thing for me to do. My lower abdomin area is still sore and hurts, but I am able to carry on with my day. When I have kept going in the past I have ended up in the bed for a week or more and on pain meds. I think all this also has to do with a lower back injury in college 10 years ago that still effects me. I have also had two children and run a home day care which has made my back worse ( I am only 31).
Here is my problem where working out is concerned:
I do not want to keep doing the same exercise, which is the Crossramp and the Eliptical then strength training. What should I do if I can't do the aerobics/ weight loss DVDs??? I also have just started running so I have added this in. I am starting to get bored with what I was doing which is why I tried adding Jillian in.
I see all these people on here with great results from doing these programs and I just think the reality of my situation is that I can't.
What else can I do?? The only thing I can think of is doing something like perhaps Jog, Eliptical, Jumping Jacks, Jump Rope, push ups and strength train in between. I probably need to stay away from squats and lunges unless a personal trainer or someone who REALLY knows what they are doing is there to help/spot/watch me.
Please let me know what you think-- I am actually really discouraged this morning and probably could be in a better mood. Everytime, I get in my grove working out and losing weight-this happens and I end up stopping---and then gaining it back.
Thanks in advance - Keisha

Oh, my goodness! I'm so sorry you hurt yourself. It sounds like you could use one session with a personal trainer to be sure you are using correct form. And I'm with you on the warm-ups; I find that if I walk on the treadmill 15 minutes before doing exercise DVD's, it really keeps me from pulling anything. My body takes longer to warm up than most people, so maybe you are like me in that. DVD programs almost never warm up long enough for my body.
If you don't want to do that, look up interval workouts at intervals.net or intervaltraining.com, I forget the URL; if you google "interval training", it's the first or second one to come up. They have a lot of routines on there that you can do at home or at the gym. Good luck, and take care of yourself!0 -
You can always try to do the DVD's in low-impact mode, meaning not jumping and adjusting the workouts to what you can do without getting hurt. I know Turbo Jam always has an example for low impact.0

I have an issue with my back due to walking differently from a broken foot. I get back spasm really easily and they keep me in bed for days.
I am curretnly getting back in the gym and do mostly stationary bikes. Spin classes are a LOT of fun and a real challange.
Once my foot gets better, I plan on working on the row machine and buid that up from light cardio to hard core cardio... this will also help strengthen my back as long as I build up slowly enough...
hope this helps0 -
Walking or swimming helps strengthen your lower back. It sounds like your muscles are going into spasm. Take it easy. I have some skechers shape-ups which have helped my lower area tone up, I would certainly recommend them.0

Thanks so much for the advice everyone:)) I will look into that interval training website. Thanks!! I will probably take tomorrow off and see how I feel Thursday.0

Have you ever had a C section? I used to get pains like that when I started,it worried me enough that I went to the Drs and they told me it had to do with scar tissue from my c section0

I actually injured my back a week ago doing the 30 Day Shred. I have a bad back and while doing the lower ab work I could feel the strain in my back. Not stopping and pushing on is what caused my injury. I also have bad knees which limits me to lower impact exercising as well.
My recommendation to you is this, keep up the strength training as lean muscle will assist you in losing fat. Don't be too concerned with not being able to do aerobics DVD's, you can change things up using your elliptical. My elliptical has different settings and levels that allow me to up the intensity, speed, etc. I rotate through a few different levels every week and it helps to work different parts of my body.
With summer approaching, go for walks, runs, bike rides, swimming. All of these different activities work different parts of your body. You run a home daycare which gives you the opportunity to play outside with the kids. Kick around a soccer ball, play tag, etc.
Don't give up on yourself. I was so upset when I had to stop the shred. I was upset at my body. I took up running last fall and had to stop because of my knees. I know how you feel. You want something so bad but it seems like your body is against you. Trust that this is not true. Everyone is different, and you need to push forward and find exercises that work for you.
No matter what, the weight will come off as long as your control your eating and try to exercise as much as you can. Good luck sweetie, I know you can do it. Believe in yourself0 -

YES!!! I had a C section almost 3 years ago. I had a horrible time with it....thanks for your input:))0 -
You may want to consider hiring a personal trainer - just for a couple of sessions. Let him/her know you want to learn proper form, and they can correct you as you are going through your exercise moves.0

Sorry you got hurt!!! You probably really need to just focus on your core and strenghten that. When I got pregnant with my son it ravaged my body. I ended up with my hop popping out of socket and it took almost a year for the pain to stop in my hips after birth. I wasnt able to do most exercises along those lines because if i did I would get hurt. Even if I went for a jog. I highly recomend you do resistance training, pilaties, & yoga. You will be AMAZED how well those exercise programs will work. A personal trainer would be wonderful too but i know we all dont have the money for one. My suggestion there is to look around. There are always trainers out there who are just starting out and will train you with free sesions so they can get their required time in before they can get their next level in licensing. Just add local gyms on your facebook if you have one or just call around and ask! If your core isnot strong enough to handle the exercises you do your just going to do more harm than good. Take it easy and remember you dont always have to be dripping with sweat to get an awsome and effective workout!0

Thanks so much! It's nice to know it's not just me:)) I also have bad knees because of how much weight I put on.....good grief!! If I am going through these body issues at 31.....I hate to see what 50s and 60s are going to be like....gosh...0 -

Yes, I think this is best as well. A trainer offered me 6 free sessions a few weeks ago. I will give him a call:))0 -
If you Google there are a lot of complaints about people hurting themselves with her DVDs. Turbo Jam is excellent, you can get those cheaper off Amazon. I just tried the Turbo Sculpt this weekend using weights, awesome workout0
-
Of course alot of people will get hurt. Her workouts are intense and if your not in good shape and perform them wrong you WILL get hurt!!0

Amen! Thank you!! I always think if I don't sweat then I didn't work out. I will focus on my core as well:)) btw---LOVE the profile picture:))0 -

My husband said the same thing this morning....of course I didn't want to hear that....thanks:)) You're both right:))0 -

wow....didn't know that. Thanks for the turbo jam info0 -
I bought the 30 day shred because I was all psyched up to lose weight. I found it difficult to do without stopping and then looked a little bit more into it. It was described as "advanced" in my fitness catalog. I am far from advanced. I didn't get hurt, but would have if I hadn't discontinued for a time. I am now using it as a goal for later on.
I found an intermediate workout that was better for me on collage videos. They let you look at the video online before you purchase it. This helped me to find one that was just right for me.
Hang in there!

I used to get shooting pains in my pelvic area while exercising. I would be fine for awhile, then I would get a sharp sudden pain. It turned out to be endometriosis, combined with ovarian cysts. I have since had a complete hysterectomy, and never have a problem with it. I am not saying that is your problem, but keep the possibility of "female troubles" in mind. If your c-section has given you issues that could be a contributing factor as well, as could your back as well.
Good luck!0 -
Sorry to hear you'd hurt yourself
I too was doing the Shred & had stopped because I had hurt my knee again
I thought I would stop to give my knee some time to heal than possibly try again
Have you tried spinning or zumba classes?????0 -
I have hurt myself on JM's Ripped in 30 - 2 different times in my lower and upper back. She absolutely does not have a proper warm-up. I try to jog/run or just get warmed up before I do some of her workouts. You may need to take a full 1-2 days of rest to get your body to the point that it's not hurting when you exercise. I have also hurt myself w/ Insanity before and I wasn't sure if I just overextended on the move or not.
Proper warm-up and increasing protein may help you. I know it did for me0 -
Have you tried spinning or zumba classes?????
I have tried Zumba and spinning...perhaps I will try to do those again....my big issue is getting to the gym when those classes are offered. I really can ONLY workout at the gym in the morning and have to be out of there by 7 in order to get home and ready before day care kids start coming. After they leave at 6 I don't have time to go. Not to make excuses, but there is just too much going on with my kids in the evening (soccer, football, this event and that one, dinner, bath, story, etc.), which is why I go in the morning at 6am. Too bad they don't offer those classes at 6am:))0 -
ouch, would do less strenuous stuff like walking and swimming0
-
I also hurt myself doing the 30 day shred and i was in so much pain I'm scared to put the dvd back in. Like someone else stated I now use turbo jam which also gets you a good workout, but is a lot safer I guess. I love Jillians videos but I cant afford to sit out three days of exercising for injuries.. Im trying to get this weight off lol0
-
I also got pains in my knees after doing the Shred for 5 days.... and I asked myself "What is more important - walking without pain or toning up using the 30 day Shred?"
Obviously, I gave up doing the Shred... but I did like her methods, so now I do Jillian's 'No More Trouble Zones' instead - which I find is a lot less 'jumpy' and moves at a much slower pace. I alternate it with Turbo Jam (which I love...!!!) for cardio.....
Through following this routine, I lost a total 14 inches (all over) in 5 weeks....0 -
I am on the 3rd day of 30 day shred and have really pulled a muscle under my shoulder blades to the point where it hurts to walk. My partner was watching me and said that it was because my whole back was curved... So basically my form is terrible but I think the issue with this workout is that its so none stop that you at too busy trying to move quickly from one move to another and get going with the exercises that i for one just couldn't tell if I was doing it right or wrong! I love the workout but there is no point if it knackers me up to the point that I can't exercise at all for a few days (conservative estimate)! I was going to put off joining the gym until it got colder and closer to winter but think I might have to move it up! X0
