Deli meat

My husband brought home some sliced turkey from the deli and I'm wondering if there is any way to know what the nutrition facts are? And while were on this subject, I've heard to stay away from packaged meats (like lunch meat) so does this mean getting it from the deli instead or just not to eat it at all?

If it was not for the sodium it would not be bad at all. It is terrible high in sodium. Alot of the deli's now carry a lower sodium version, but it is still like 240mg at 50% under the regular.0

I generally don't eat deli meat/lunch meat at all....or at least try to limit it to like once or twice a month. You can generally find some meats that are OK calorie/fat wise.....but irregardless....the sodium levels will be terrible (even with the lower sodium stuff...in my opinion).0

Yeah, the sodium is what makes it so bad. Try looking for the lowest sodium varieties. I like the Low Sodium Sara Lee Honey Ham. It has 45% less sodium than the regular, but it's still a bit high 400mg for 2oz. So eat it sparringly. Good Luck0

i've worked at a couple delis now, and you have to find one that cooks/cures some of they're own meats to know you're avoiding the sodium and preservatives they pump into deli meats. the last place i worked at made their own roast beef and people would come from far for it.. but the rest of the meats were the same thing as the pre packaged stuff.
deil meat isn't the worst thing you could eat, but it is usually full of tons of chemicals..0 -

If you know the brand of deli meat, you could look for it in the food database. If it's not in there, you could try doing a search online for the nutritional information and then add it to the food database. And from what I have experienced, packaged meats are worse for you than meat from the actual deli. They both use preservatives to keep them fresh which can be bad for you, but I have noticed that from the deli is better nutrionally speaking than packaged. It's not always a big difference though so it's up to you on what you want to eat. I personally like DiLusso from Cub or Healthy Ones from Target, both are from the deli.0

You can find really good deli meat that's not that high in sodium. Boar's Head has a pretty healthy line of deli meats.0

I second boars head if you must to deli meats - another way to go is to cook a chicken breast or turkey breast either steam it or in the slow cooker etc...then carve it up and put it in the fridge in a container - lessens cooking time to make it easier on you - not as easy as deli meat but healthier!0

It's evil.
I have recently found lately when something proclaims to be "low fat" or "lower in calorie" then it's HIGH in sodium. If I have the extra calories to spare I'd rather have the higher calorie/lower sodium item.
I usually make a turkey sandwich for lunch but the sodium in 6 slices (serving size) is outrageous. I just have to find a better...lower sodium sandwich meat.
