Self-conscious?

Maybe I am the only one with this problem, but I am very self-conscious. I dislike working out in front of other people...that's why I don't go to the gym. I'm embarrassed, I guess. I like to do the Slim in 6 videos at home, but if my husband is @ home I won't do them, I'll wait until he leaves. I guess I'm afraid that someone will make fun of me or say something smart-alecky. How do you guys get around this problem? Or am I just being totally neurotic about it?

I don't work out in front of people either.
Maybe subconciously I think the same thing.
I am just more comfortable doing it alone.
So, if you are neurotic, so am I. :flowerforyou:
  • its nothing like neurotic
i think 50% of ppl r like that.. so am i

i preffer doing it alone...welcome to the club :flowerforyou:
  • i'm right there with you, i had a ery hard time bringing myself to actually join a gym especially because it's in my town and i knew i'd end up seeing people that i know. It turns out that the gym isn't full of "hard-bodies" and other people look wayyyyy weirder when they are working out than i do so i ended up getting over it. try working out when ur husband is home first because he loves you, he will def NOT make fun of you..if you cn get past that, then try going to a park to walk/run because people will be there but not as concentrated as the gym..work ur way up to the gym

I'm right with ya'll...I do not exercise in front of my husband but it doesn't bother me at all to exercise with MY kids watching. My daughter loves to do Richard Simmon's.

I USED to be this way! I was working out one day doing this dance video and DH walked in (I didn't know it) and he had been standing there watching me:blushing: I think he knew I was embarressed, so he didn't say anything, but the next day he asked if I was going to do that dancing again b/c he thought I looked sexy and I just looked at him and said "Honey, if this blubber bouncing all over the place moves you...then just back up and watch me go... Of course, I've been married 19 yrs, so he's not suprised by anything anymore and neither am I! I work out now when the mood hits and they (he and the kids) go about their business! It's all good and you will overcome it! Your DH will probably enjoy watching you:wink:

I get very angry:mad: when someone comes into the room. I feel so stupid. As I get closer to my goal weight I am more comfortable (but still hate being interupted)

Now that I think about it I believe for me it has to do with how many times I have started and stopped at dieting and exercise. I feel stupid because I have blown up the Slim in 6 for 2 days then quit.

Now that I have lost 25 pounds I believe everyone around me knows I am serious.

    Have a great day!:flowerforyou:

I think for me it has to do with the embarassment/self consciousness over how out of shape I am. I have a fitness program on my x-box that I do at home, and the first time I did it my boyfriend sat there watching me. ever since then, I always do it alone. I do hope that as I get in better shape I won't feel the same way.

For me i feel completely silly working out by myself... and i feel super weird if my husband comes walking in on me... i would prefer to go to an actual class or to the gym where everyone else is doing the same thing... besides i find when i have other people around i tend to work out harder and longer and am less likey to quit early...

Oh boy...same here. I hate for anyone to see me working out. I dont mind when Im outside doing my walk as much, although I do get self-conscious "pumping" my arms if anyone is out:blushing: But when I do my dvd's at home, no one had better DARE walk into the room lol....but my family knows that about me and are to AFRAID to walk in:laugh:

But I think Im going to have to get over it QUICK! We just went and checked out the local gym yesterday, and we're supposed to go back on Monday and join on their Family Plan:ohwell: Im sooo nervous! But the good news is that my son, step-son and partner have all jumped on the "health wagon" with me:drinker:

Roni it will be different when all the ppl around you are doign the same thing as you!!
As far as pumping your arms...I was the same way until I got my HRM. Now when it goes from 125 to 145 from using my arms....I dont CARE what anyone thinks...it is about ME!!
(and at the walking park I see other ladies looking at me and then imitating what i do!!)

I used to feel funny going to the gym. Then I realized nobody watches anybody else. Or, if they are, they are watching the really skinny chick who isn't even working out hard enough to sweat. Or, like Jeannie said, they are watching, so they can do the same thing you are.

The other day, I had someone walk by while I was doing the butterfly machine. They looked at me. I kind of stared back at them, then refocused on my "get past the pain, it's only two more reps spot on the carpet". Later they came by and said that they were impressed with the weight I was using (37 lbs). I just laughed and said that under this fat, I'm a buff chick! I didn't think 37 lbs was all that, but I guess it is...
