Is being allergic and intolerant the same?

Here's my issue I am either allergic to or intolerant of some of the best fruits.
Kiwi is a definitely an allergy. I had a kiwi for the first time ever in 1993 first year of college. I dorm mate of mind introduced me. Of course I was thrown aback by the color and the fuzz and to top it off it was green on the inside. YUCK! LOL! But I tasted it anyway. WOW! The absolute best instantly became a favorite. Until about 5 minutes after consumption my lips were swollen and my tongue began to itch, and I broke out. But it was so good, a week or so later I decided hey I will just take some Benedryl and eat another one. Yeah I ended up in the Emergency Room with an Epi jammed in my thigh. Needless to say I did not try that again. Swollen lips I could deal with swollen air way not so much.
Apples I'm not sure because the give me a headache, make me nauseous and I actually vomit (sorry to be graphic)
Watermelons same issue as apples.
Does anyone else have these issues? Is there something I missing or should be doing or not doing so that the apples and watermelon does not make me sick?

Typically intollerant means tummy issues and allergic means a range of things from overproduction of muscus to closing of airways. I've never heard about these kinda of reactions though.... I know some fruit reactions indicate a latex allergy though so I might look into that farther.0

No they aren't the same. It could be the acid in the fruits effecting your stomach or gallbladder. I would definitely see a doctor in case its an ulcer or gallbladder issue. Vomiting after eating is not normal.0

They are most def not the same thing0

Joe: Doctor, Doctor it hurts when I do this
Doc: Stop doing that.
You are allergic to those fruits, probably nothing you can do to overcome it. See your doc, they can test you to see what fruits, and or what in fruits you are allergic to.0 -

i second this..get a test done to figure out what all fruits are you allergic to0 -
My son had several food intolerances as an infant (no allergies) and they caused tummy issues for him too - including vomiting/reflux and various other reactions. He outgrew them all. One thing that really helped him digest some of those things was a healthy dose of probiotics. I would ask your doc. about it, and if it's really worrying you, I would ask to see a GI doc.0

This isn't entirely true. Depending on the type of allergy, there are ways to overcome it. But, you do need to see an allergist in order to figure out what exactly you are allergic or intolerant to and whether or not you can do certain things to get over the allergy.0 -
No they are not the same thing, however for purposes of eating them or not, doesn't really matter. I have tow kids with extreme food allergies and intolerances. A food allergy CAN present as headache, vomiting, upset stomach. All people react differently to every allergy. I would recommend calling an allergist and ask for food allergy testing, they will draw your blood and do a work up. In the meantime keep a food/symptom journal on hand and write EVERYTHING down! No matter how insignificant it may seem. You will be able to track what foods bother you. Also try the organic kinds, they may help you it could be the chemicals used on certain foods that cause issues not the food itself. (I would only do this for foods that you really like)0

Thanks Everyone. I don't eat any of them since I realized there was an issue. However I know that there are remedies for lactose intolerance so I was wondering if the same was for other foods.
I also know that apples are a good source for number of things including weight lost. And atermelon is an excellent source of potassium and vitamins A, C, and B6. Both are good for cancer prevention, asthma, and arthritis. I will make an appoint o see an allergist though. Thanks again0 -

This sounds like Oral Allergy Syndrome, which I also have. Very common in hayfever sufferers.
It's not a true 'allergy', but you will have a reaction to certain fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts that your body misidentifies as pollens to which you truly are allergic. Often times, OAS sufferers CAN eat the offending food without any problem if it's been cooked as it changes the structure of the proteins in it, whereas someone truly allergic to the food could not. You may also find that you can eat some things in winter but not when the pollens that bother you are in the air (spring, fall).
Kiwi and apple skins do me in as well! So do cantaloupe, celery, and a few other things.
Google for articles on Oral Allergy Syndrome and you'll find all the info you need as well as great lists of which pollens tend to cause reactions to which foods.
Once you know what to watch out for, it's pretty easy to manage.
It's called Oral Allergy Syndrome, by the way, because symptoms are usually concentrated in the mouth, throat and neck, although you can also get hives and severe intestinal distress as well. Unlike TRUE food allergies, OAS very, very rarely results in anaphylaxis. But your airway can swell shut, cutting off your breathing, so you should take it seriously.0
