Feeling sick after eating healthy?

I suffer from depression among other things and for about 4 months all I ate was junk, pizza, pastries, all that bad stuff. Long story short, moving away from home caused me tons of panic attacks and stress. I moved back December 2nd of last year. About a month ago I had all but stopped eating things with sugar, really not eating much in general. Then one day I felt really sick. I couldn't stay out of the bathroom. No diarrhea, but definitely couldn't stay out of the bathroom. After day one I got horribly nauseous, weak, dizzy, had headaches, hot and cold flashes, no vomiting or anything though. I didn't eat at all. I just drank tons of powerade and took vitamins. Eventually that went away. But now that I'm eating healthy it's been about a month since that attack and I still feel ill? It feels like I have the flu. I was wondering if anyone else has ever gone through this when making a change to their diet like this and for how long it lasted. I'm not eating a whole bunch of fiber or anything. Mostly just fruits and vegetables. I haven't been drinking milk or eating cheese or anything so dairy isn't the issue. No diarrhea, vomiting or any of that stuff. Just a general ill flu like feeling. I've also started walking after a long time being sedentary. Any opinions, personal stories, etc would be appreciated. Made an appointment and am going to see my doctor this month about it, would just like some input. Sorry if this is really hard to follow, I"m not feeling well still.

    Mostly just fruits and vegetables.

    This does not sound like a heatlhy diet. How many calories do you eat a day? How much protein and fat?

    Do you eat meat? If not, do you include lots of nuts, seeds and legumes in your diet for protein?

    If you're only eating fruits and veggies you're probably lacking in fats and protein. You should probably go to your doctor if you're still feeling ill after that long.

    You are making wrong connections here, switching to healthy eating can not make sick. Just because it happens that they both started at same time does not mean that they are related. Most likely some kind of virus or something. Of course unless you are not eating enough calories and are in too big deficit, that can make you feel weak and dizzy for sure. But then again, taht's not "healthy".Also make sure you get enough fat in your diet. 0.4g per pound of body mass should be minimum. Also make sure you drink enough water. Also there is an option that by switching foods you might have included something that you have allergy for and didn't know about. But eating healthy in general cos not cause it for sure.

    Maybe when you go to your appointment, you can have them draw blood? I would think four months of struggling mentally and physically can really deplete a person and it might take awhile to get back on track. Blood work could give you an idea of what's happening in your body. Also, along with your food diary, it might be a good idea to log how you feel after meals. You could be sensitive to something you're consuming, even if it hadn't bothered you before. I hope you find some answers and feel better soon!

    My first advice would be to see your Doctor. I would also like to throw out there that it sounds a awful lot like gallbladder issues.
  • I used the food diary this morning to put in what I typically eat and it says I'm low on protein and fat, and a little bit over on carbs and sugar. Very new to this. I usually eat oatmeal in the morning with a grapefruit, vegetables for lunch, and maybe fish or something small for dinner. Rarely eat meat and finding it hard to get up to 1500 calories a day. I really appreciate the advice. Anxiety (I have GAD) has been making it very hard for me to eat because it's causing cramps, bloating, all that fun stuff, so I guess I've just avoided it a lot. I've only started eating this way for the past 7 days or so, so it's probably dietary? Definitely going to the doctor soon.

    Ditto on seeing your doctor. It definitely sounds like more than a diet change issue.

    Get all your food groups in (unless you are lactose.) You can't just eat veggies and fruit. Get some probiotics into you. Go see your doctor.

    There are stomach issues that can stem from a number of things (bad food choices, infections, antibiotics, medications, etc) that can make it hard for you to digest certain things.

    Your body needs protein and fat. Try to add some to your diet. Nuts are great, they contain healthy fats, fiber, protein and other important nutrients. Beans are good sources or nutrients including protien and fiber, but are relatively fat free.

    I'd suggest cutting back on sugar and refinted grains, as these can contribute to bloating, and replace with whole grains, beans, nuts, seeds. And don't make your meals fat free. Stir fry your veggies. Make dressing with olive oil for your salads. Add peanut butter to your oatmeal. Add avocado to your salads.

    Also, if you have trouble eating you might benefit from a daily multi-vitamin. When you see your doctor, ask him/her to suggest a diet for you or to refer you to a dietician.
  • I feel really bad for you and for everyone who don't realize that consuming too much vitamin K can do more harm then good for some people. The first thing we do when starting to eat healthy is we start eating veggies. We do it for a couple of weeks then then we get sick from it. Too much vitamin k will cause many hidden problems that doctors don't want to talk about. Please watch video for more info! :'(

    Erk, fruits and vegetables are very high in fiber and can make you sick if you don't balance them with other foods. Definitely go see a doctor to find out what they would recommend for your diet and exercise right now, maybe you're not getting enough insulin from your food and your body is exhausted.

    Fruits need to be balanced out with other foods in a diet. For example, an apple will raise your blood sugar. Your body naturally turns to carbs and sugars first so if you consume so many apples, your body will be unable to burn fat.

    It's pretty basic nutrition.

    Mmm, insulin doesn't come from food. See, for example, How Does Insulin Work?:
    Insulin is a hormone in the body produced by the pancreas. Your body uses insulin to move the sugar (glucose) obtained from food from the bloodstream into cells throughout the body. The cells are then able to use the sugar for energy.

    Ohhh, thanks for catching that. I should've just said sugar then. I'm not really a diabetic and I don't personally know any diabetics; my knowledge is pretty limited. I thought you could use that word interchangeably with sugar.
