learning to run

okay this is going to sound odd. but does anyone know of any methods or exercises that can help with the actuall physical motion of running. a little back round 11 years ago i broke my leg badly, should have been plated but the dr chose not to due to any risk of possible infection ( i was 7 months pregnant). So he chose to do a closed reduction and casting for long duration. Well i was in a cast for 6 months, with no physical therepy order during or after. I basicly had to learn to walk again with that leg on my own. The ankle did not bend in the side to side motion so to speak for a few years.
here is the problem since then the actual motion of running is still feels very awkward. which makes me have to stop after just a small time. ( yes i know its gone on this long cause until recently i have not really 'worked' on 'relearning it')
any idea other than just keep working at it a little more each time?

I would possibly go to a doctor (could be family dr or orthopedist) and have it looked at just to make sure it is stable enough for running and that the break healed correctly and see what he would recommend for learning to run again...i.e. rehabilitation0

Have you tried getting on an elliptical? That simulates the motion of running but without the impact of running.0

I'm no PT, but when I was rehabbing a knee issue, I did some aqua-jogging. You go through the running motion, but in the deep end of a pool (so your feet don't hit the bottom.) You can wear a floatation belt if you're a sinker. Also, a treadmill is less work than actual running, so that could help you build the strength.0

and it healed well well the break itself healed well, but to me it seems being in the cast kinda messed up my ankle . well it was somewhat messed up before the fall0

With a break as serious as yours I would go to the doctor before doing ANYTHING that could put any type of extra strain on the leg. The last thing you want to do is cause damage to the bone or muscles of the leg. A doctor may put you in physical therapy which would be the best thing because a physical therapist will now the best ways to get you going. Other wise take it slow. Do a walk/jog method (walk for 3 mins jog for no more than 15-30 second in your case [sorry that sounds bad] when you feel stronger or feel like you have a better handle on it add 15 seconds to your job) or elliptical which is very gentle on your joints. But the best of everything I recommended it Doctor and therapy. Good luck.0
