I lost 95 lbs and conquered my PCOS!

I have PCOS (poly cystic ovarian syndrome) and I left it untreated for several years and just ignored my poor health. This lead to me having multiple miscarries, due to my hormones being out of whack and my body would automatically reject the potential baby. I also had prediabetes, but no longer due to my change in diet/exercise. In the summer of 2011 I witnessed my dad have a heart attack. Well I was at work, but I went straight to the hospital after I got off work. It scared me, seeing him like that. He survived, but had to have quadruple bypass surgery, which I took the day off work to be with him. I remember taken him to his therapy afterwards and the months it took for him to recover from the ordeal. I kept thinking, that could be me next time. It made me take a long hard long at myself and my poor health. I decided to not allow myself to continue down the path I was on. I made a change which started in January 2012.

The city I live in does this thing called "the pound plunge" its a 12 week weight loss competition, you have teams of 4. The team that drops the most pounds wins the grand prize, which is a cruise vacation, also have lots of little prizes as well. So I joined and only lost 15 lbs during those 12 weeks. I kept going after it was over, I stuck with the Zumba class I had started during the pound plunge. I kept eating healthy and took walks, I researched PCOS and found tips on how to treat it naturally, and what foods to avoid. I also got with a doctor and talked about treatment for my PCOS and got put on birth control, which I stayed on for about a year in a half. I couldn't have children due to being overweight, and since my husband and I want children I did what I needed to get healthy, so I could be a mother.

Fast forward 2 1/2 years, I currently wear size 4/6 US women's Jeans, and S shirts. My feet, fingers, breast, everything shrunk! I went from a 42DDD to a 36C, from a size 10 shoe to a size 8 shoe, from a size 9 wedding ring to a 7.5 ring, it's just amazing how tiny I am now. I love it! Anyways as mentioned in the last paragraph I did all this so I can have a baby. I went off my birth control the beginning of August and BAM! I'm pregnant, currently 9 weeks everything looks good, and my body is not rejecting it this time. I'm experiencing every symptom fully for the first time in my life. I had been pregnant before, but my hormones dropped so fast and I would loose it before I could really have any symptoms or morning sickness. I have a goal set to only gain 30 lbs during my new adventure, and keep up with the diet and light exercise. I know this post is very long, but for those who read it I hope it can bring you some motivation. I never wanted to get skinny for vanity sake, it was always health oriented and I could care less the size clothes I wear as long as I'm healthy. :)

    Way to go! Congratulations!
Controlling your weight while being pregnant is doable! Your goal is totally achievable! I never deprieved myself while pregnant but didn't over indulge either. When I gave birth, I was at 25 lbs! 3 weeks after, I was back to my before pregnancy weight. Nursing and walking everyday, I shed another 5 lbs in 3 months.
You can do this: listen to your body, eat healthily and keep your goals in mind!

I got a bit of a chuckle at you pictures. I am doing a happy dance this week because I finally fit into a size 20 jeans. I started in tight 24's.

And I agree, it's totally doable to keep weight gain under control during pregnancy (I'm 25 weeks & up 13 lbs).

Thank-you for all the replies! I/we are very excited and thrilled to be having our first child after 10 years of marriage. I had seriously thought we'd be the crazy cat couple the rest of our life lol. I've been told by family I look anorexic and unhealthy. I've lost a friend due to silly jealousy, and been in the hospital several times due to my PCOS issues. I never quit! Which is the one thing I always tell people never give up. So what you binged today and didn't workout. Tomorrow is a new day and a fresh start to try again

Congratulations on your weight loss, your pregnancy, and controlling your PCOS. I have it, too. I've reached my goal and I feel very, very blessed to have been able to have 5 children in spite of the condition. If you have the time, I would love to message back and forth with you to get more pointers on how you "conquered" your PCOS. I currently take Metformin for it, although with my low weight and daily exercise, my dose has been cut in half. My daughter has the condition as well, and while she's just a teenager, I tell her she is lucky to have learned of her condition NOW and not when she's in her 30s like I was. She can work and learn to control her weight and therefore her condition before she balloons up to morbidly obese like I was.

I hope your pregnancy is a healthy and successful one. Best wishes!
  • This post was beyond inspiring. I'm suspected to have PCOS and they've been conducting tests. If it is in fact confirmed, I'll have this to look up to and know there's a lot of hope for me. Thank you for sharing your journey.

I was diagnosed at 20, when I had gone about 6-7 months without a period and was not pregnant either. So I sought out help and wanted to know what the heck was going on. I was straight up told when diagnosed to loose 50 lbs and get on birth control. Since I wanted kids I said no to the birth control, I also didn't listen and gained even more weight over the years. I know others with PCOS with children as well. My cousin Lacy has been pregnant 16 times (11 miscarries, 1 was born, but died at 7 months and 4 that are alive and healthy as can be) So I know its possible, just more difficult. Well anyways, I posted this forum over a year ago but it still good information. You should skim through it or let your daughter read
