I made the mistake of buying a big ole bag of Pistachios from Costco. I know I ate way too many the first time, to I decided to count how many I will eat before I'm satisfied. That way I can record the most accurate calories and know how bad I Effed up.
Anyhow, I ate 100 pistachios (shells removed).
The package states:
shelled, 28 grams = 160
unshelled, 1/2 cup = 160
Well, I placed them on the food scale until it read 1g. (about 5 pistachios) . Sooo, if 5 pistachios weigh 1 gram, then multiply that by 20 = 100 pistachios right, which is 20 grams. Am I right? I hope I am cause I logged it as 1 serving.
Math is hard.
Thanks

Ok so obviously it would be better to weigh them before you eat them because they can vary nut to nut in size. But you know that. So in estimating, I would say that math seems right to me, but I'm not a math person. And I feel like 100 pistacios is a huge serving size...0

Thanks shadow. You're right I should have. Although, it seems like a lot, It's actually one serving = 160, if the math is correct.
I did weigh the plumpest ones.

I'm thankful pistachios are so expensive... keeps me out of 'em!0

Those sound really tasty.... Now, tell me I only ate 1 serving.

Math seems right, although my own scale is not nearly accurate enough to trust it at the one gram level. Maybe shell enough to weigh 14 grams?0

That doesn't sound right to me at all. I think your scale is not accurate at that small level of grams. That amount was most likely 300-400 calories. Nut serving sizes are incredibly small and look so sad and lonely even in the tiniest bowl I have.0

Ditto what the previous poster said. Your standard food scale is not going to be very accurate down to that low of a weight. Per the link above, it looks like you ate closer to 400 calories worth of pistachios.0 -
I have a weakness for the nuts myself. The issues is if they are measured shelled or unshelled. I think MFP has measurements for both. I actually measure by the cup because mine have shells on. Typically, a serving size is 1/2 cup w/ shells, and 1/4 cup shelled. I find it hard to believe you ate 100. I had a bag in a gift basket that I admit I was "working on" this week -- eating them and not logging consistently. (Fortunately, no weight gain, but I'm at another plateau -- wonder why? Those darn pistachios.) But because they had the shells on, I don't think I ate more that 20 at a sitting. It's just so time-consuming to take the shells off that I couldn't consume 100 that way.0

I love pistachios and could eat that many without thinking about it. I make it a point when I get home with them to measure them out and put them in baggies so that doesn't happen to me.0

I'm sorry, hun. Either you need new batteries or new kitchen scales...or your pistachios were dwarf size
I weighed 50 without shells. They came to 35 g. So 100 pistachios would most likely be 70 g = 427 kcal according to MFP.0 -
Your scale registered 1 gram on 5 pistachios because it rounded up.
5 pistachios do not weigh 1 gram, but they also do not weigh 0. Chances are, if you kept putting pistachios on the scale it would still say 1 gram for a bit.0 -

Wow, that was really helpful to visualize. Thanks.

You probably ate 2 servings. Look here:

yeah, I had the same problem with peanuts. So I unshelled the amount that I thought that I wanted to eat, and then weighed it 37 g of unshelled peanuts equals 28 g of shelled peanuts.. Not as much fun to eat the nuts after the shells were off.
You might want to unshell the pistachios and then weigh to get an accurate weight, but so tedious for pistachios.

According to the USDA, one pistachio has approximately 4 calories. So if you ate 100 pistachios then you ate about 400 calories.0

Hi all and thank you for all the responses. I was partying at Carnival!!!
Anyway, Yes, most of you are right. I did it wrong.
I went back and shelled the nuts and didn't place them one at a time, as I did the first time. For 6 nuts, it showed 14 g. So I just kept shelling and adding on until I reached 28 grams.... appro. 20 nuts. So I actually ate 2.5 servings = 400 calories
I'm glad I know the right amount of calories to log now, but man, wouldn't that have been nice if it was true.
Thanks again to all who took the time to clarify.

I can go to town on anything that is crunchy or nuts. those are my major binge foods.0 -
just to make it easy...4 calories=1 nut...so even if you ate 100, it's not too bad (only 400 calories...)0
