are isotonic sports drinks necessary?

I am a complete beginner when it comes to fitness and so I have no idea if this is a silly question or not.

My roommate bought 16 bottles of isotonic sports drinks because they were on off and because she thought they might be useful for when we work out, but I have no idea if I actually need them for workouts or not or whether they're just empty calories and so I wanted to know some opinions? Like if they are useful, is it best to drink them through workouts or before and after? We both do a lot of cardio with a little bit of strength here and so I don't know if that affects it at all.

Basically, has she wasted her money or are sports drinks useful? Thanks in advance :D

  • I'm new to diets so can't speak from experience but I remember reading that they give you no more help than water. Just a marketing ploy.
