I've heard that exercising on an empty stomach is the best way to lose fat, but when I do this I have trouble keeping my energy up throughout the workout. Am I still maximizing the benefits of a workout if I eat before and after?

I wouldn't want to eat something big immediately before working out! But I would imagine having a banana or something would help. I've done that before an evening class, when I knew I wouldn't be eating dinner for a couple of hours.
Exercising 2 hours after eating (I have heard on another weight loss site) is the same as exercising on an empty stomach.0 -
If you are exercising for more than an hour, I'd reccomend a little snack. This morning before my run, I had a small banana and caramel popcorn ricecake. 150 cals. Kept me going...0

30-45 mins before your workout try to consume something with a mix of nutrients, preferably, fat, carbs, and protein to start you metabolism and give you sustained energy. It will also decrease a spike in blood sugar levels!0
