Running for a year and time seems to be getting slower

I have been running now for almost a year and I've noticed that my time, per mile, is getting slower not faster. I went from running an 8:45-8:50 mile to a 9:00-9:10 mile. I did injure my leg, a few months ago, but took 2 weeks off to let it heal and it's feeling great now. I feel like my pace is faster but according to my Garmin, it's getting worse. I was wondering if there is anyone out there that can give me some tips or advise on how to get back to my previous time. I'm not a hardcore runner(although I wish I could be) due to having a job and 2 small ones at home, so I average about 12-15 miles a week. I run 3, sometimes 4, times a week. Any advice would be GREAT :)

Are you doing any kind of intervals, hills, fartleks? Or just straight running?
ETA: any kind of cross-training like weights, bike riding, etc?

I do hills and intervals, sometimes, but it's mainly straight running. Yes, I do cross-training. I tend to stick with weight training. Mainly for my legs, higs, abs, and butt!
  • Hmmm. It could be a case of needing to do MORE intervals and hills to strengthen the glutes. If you're losing weight, you could be losing muscle too.

Have you changed the display on your Garmin? I have the 305 which is an old model and I sometimes accidentally toggle back and forth between it displaying my LAP pace and my AVG pace (which is the overall). Also, it takes a few moments for the pace to catch up, so I never look at my pace while I'm on a hill.

    1) was your time slower just before the injury? Or have you only slowed down since?

    2) are you running the same routes?

    3) any dietary changes?

No, my time was good before the ingury

I switch back and forth between routes depending on how many miles I want to run that day.

    No real dietary changes.
