Sudden Weight Gain

Hi! I'm stumped with my weight issues lately. About 3 years ago, I lost 50 pounds by changing my diet, running a lot and doing HIIT at the gym 5 days a week. I kept the weight off for about 2 years by sticking with a low carb, high protein diet and vegetable diet and continuing to go to the gym doing HIIT, weights and cardio 4-5 days a week. Out of nowhere, I started noticing my weight slowly going up...it started with 1-2 pounds a week and after 3 months, I gained 15 pounds. At the same time, I noticed that my menstrual cycle became abnormal. I tried different diets, tried eliminating things such as sweets, caffeine, low carbs carbs and dairy and I would lose 3-5 pounds and then gain it right back. I went to a doctor who sent me for a series of thyroid tests which all came back normal. I've read up on different articles online which suggest to get hormones checked and to rule out things like PCOS.
-What type of doctor would I consult regarding hormones? Would it be an endocronologist or gyno?
-Has anyone else experienced a simliar issue where you lost weight by changing lifestyle and gained some back by continuing to eat healthy and exercise?
Thanks in advance!

How much are you eating? During the time you were slowly gaining, I'm guessing you were not tracking. If you continued to eat at the same amount (as before gaining) but decreased activity, this could be the answer. Or you started to eat more. A gain of 15 pounds in 3 months is approximately a surplus of 576 calories a day.0

If you have a regular internist, start there. He/she will refer you to endo or gyno or whatever. When they tested you for thyroid issues, did they do any other tests? If not, demand it! Good luck.0

Other than the routine bloodwork like glucose, cholesterol, etc, no additional tests were done. What other types of tests were you referring to? I don't have a regular internist. Would my general physician be able to lead me in the right direction?0

I'm not a doctor, but vitamin deficiencies can throw you off a lot. Yes, general doc would help, refer you to the right people.0

You can definitely start with your doc, who may end up referring you to an endocrinologist. I would suggest keeping a diary of your diet including all portion weights and calorie counts, and bring in the one from when you were losing too.
If your period is off all of a sudden, that is reason to get more tests right there. They will probably run a hormone panel to test for various reproductive issues. When I started rapidly gaining, my period had disappeared too. Definitely not something to be ignored.0
