Help! I really want to be serious about working out, I just am seriously lacking the motivation to. :[ I always feel like making excuses instead of being accountable and hitting the gym....
Any suggestions for ways to be motivated and excited to work out?

The only motivation you should need is yourself! (: Realise that you're doing this for you, and that you're never gonig to regret gonig to the gym. You're gonig to regret skipping it though!

Nothing except the fact of knowing that with each workout you are getting closer and closer to your goal. As my son's always says..."there's NO substitution for hard work". And I think Nike says it best...JUST DO IT! :-)

    Good Luck!

I am interested in this topic as well. I am the excuse queen. From... I have to get dinner going in a half hour, to I worked extra hard today at work so I don't need to work out tonight.

If you wait to feel motivated or inspired, you'll never get anywhere. Just make the commitment to go to the gym and do it whether you feel like it or not. Most of the time I hate the idea of going and exercising but I've made the commitment to myself and I go - I feel great afterwards, not so much before or during. Realize that most people don't feel psyched up about sweating and straining - they do it because they like the results. Try different types of exercises and classes to find some you like - keep trying different things until you find something that fits you. You can also try getting a personal trainer - for many people having a set appointment with someone gets them to the gym (and a trainer will make sure you work out to capacity).

Yes. Sign up for an event. A 5k, a sprint triathlon, etc. Tell people you are doing it. Tell a lot of people. Sign up to do it with friends if you can.

Going to the gym because you "should" or because one "needs to lose weight" is very vague. I did this for years with up and down results. Once I started doing events, my training became much more focused. Last winter there were a lot of days I didn't want to get up at 5:30 am to go to the gym, but knowing that 12 weeks from then I'd be on the starting line of an Olympic distance triathlon; that got me out the door.

It comes down to having goals and being accountable. SMART goals. Going to the gym for the sake of going to the gym is not specific, measurable, attainable, reasonable, or timely (SMART). Going for a run to build base mileage for a 5k is. Hitting the gym to do core exercises to help running form and prevent injury is.

That's my 2 cents from what worked in my life.

Hi! Just put one foot forward....then the next...I lost 13 lbs last year and put it all back on over the holidays and stressful situations. Yes, I tend to stress eat. Anyway, I've been putting off a gym membership because it costs so much and I've also put off working out again because my VCR has broken two tapes in a row and my workout videos are VCR tapes. I decided just to bite the bullet and if the VCR eats my tapes, it's ok and if not, I'll keep exercising with them. The library has other videos for free in case my tapes get eaten. That's my motivation. Just take a step and see how you feel. Best wishes!
  • I'm not sure what would be the best way for you... but the way I motivate myself is to remember, it's the way I wake up... I have to be up at 4 am to get ready for work, and I sleep on the hour long bus ride... so when I get to Base, I go to the gym and just walk for 30 min at 4 mph... and I'm wide awake. After that you're already at the gym, so you can go to whatever equipment you need to get the workout you want done.
