So, last night i bought a whole bunch of Progresso light soups because they are so low in calories and i have been wanting something new for lunch. Well, I ate my can today (Yes I ate the whole can) then i decided to look at the sodium...OUCH! I have figured my meals out today and i am still under my sodium number..so if i stay under my sodium count and drink lots of water do you guys think it would be okay to keep eating these soups for lunch? I really dont want the money i spent to go to waste...haha!

If you're under your sodium number for the day you should be just fine. I would drink extra water the days you eat it. Sodium is a big water retainer.

Great question!! I'm battling the high sodium/ low calorie fight and would LOVE some input. I too drink TONS of water to offset the sodium

I would go ahead and eat them. If you can work them into your daily sodium allotment, that's ok. Try keeping it to half a can a day if that's difficult.

As long as it is under, all good. I gave up canned soups because of sodium and have gone to fresh veggies and fruits. Heck I gave up almost all my canned favorites. The sodium monster is a tough beast.
  • I dont see why not, as long as you stay at or under your sodium intake goal for the day. I just bought a bunch of frozen lean cuisine and weight watchers meals to eat at work and someone pointed out that they are high in sodium but when I logged it in my food diary along with the other meals I planned to eat today I still was under my limit. Its always good to switch things upm, that way you're less likely to get bored and eat something not good for you

My nutrionist told me about 2500mg - 3500mg is where we want to be, and any given item should not exceed 200mg per serving. However, if you can balance it well enough then I don't see why you can't eat the soup.

I usually eat one serving (half the can) with other foods for a meal. That way I get more food and stay under on my sodium.

I would think so. I have high blood pressure and take meds for it. I tend to go over on my sodium sometimes (which my sister who is also on MFP gets on me about) but I drink plenty of water. Just stay under your daily recommended allowance.

Awesome! Thanks so much everyone! I will probably finish up what i have and not buy them again..even if i can fit it in..it just makes me uncomfortable eating something with that high of sodium content.

I swear sodium is the bane of my existance. I'm working to get a handle on it. All the things they say you can eat to "stay on program" are LOADED with salt. Subway .... roast beef..over 1400g. of sodium. Even the turkey had over ..um it was either 700 or 900. Cottage cheese has a lot. I'll get it figured out, but it's a very slow process! I think the soups have to go. They aren't that filling, don't stick with you, and the sodium isn't worth it. I would use what I have, but wouldn't buy anymore.
  • fyi i think pogresso also makes low sodium soups. I have no idea how they taste but it might be worth checking out

My favorites are the Amy's Light in Sodium line. I like the lentil vegetable the best. Put a generous dusting of Mrs. Dash Caribbean Spice in it, and it's excellent.

If I'm doing Subway, I'm doing the roasted chicken salad. I forget the exact sodium content, but I'm pretty sure it's low enough that adding shredded cheese is doable. Without the cheese, it's too low in calories for a meal.

I got fooled by those soups too! Thank goodness I only bought three cans. Now that you are wise to it, maybe just spread them out for when you need something quick and only eat half a can, saving the other half for the next day. They usually have a pretty long shelf life.
ETA: The ones I bought were low sodium and still through the roof!
