Not really new to MFP but never really did the whole introductory thing.

Type I diabetic for 15 years (next month)...and as of the last 2 months have been working on building up my distance running...
Today hit a major milestone...make that 10 milestones! LOL I am elated right now. I don't know what to do with myself.
Both my half marathon and my Tough Mudder are well within reach...

No weight loss goal as I'm pretty content with my weight (average for my height and age)...but ultimate goal is to:
1.) Run a half marathon by Spring (of course it would have been winter but there's nothing in my area)
2.) Complete Tough Mudder by next Fall
3.) Complete a full marathon by this time next year.

If you have similar goals or also love running, feel free to add me! Always looking to my posse of awesome people.

HOORAY!

  • Awesome goals and it's fantastic that you're increasing running distance while maintaining good blood sugar control. Have you read "The Diabetic Athlete's Handbook" by Sheri Colberg? ~Lynn /Glucerna

Well done! I work in cycling and I met a team this summer, Team Novo Nordisk. All their athletes have type 1 diabetes and are pro cyclists, do marathons/ironman, etc.! Very inspiring people. You might already know about them but if you don't, I invite you to look at their FB page or website if you'd like.

There is a type 1/juvenile diabetes group on MFP also. I do a lot of hiking/backpacking (mostly solo) as a type 1 and I try not to let it hold me back. I need to lose some weight and get into better shape, but I want to climb Mt. Rainier someday (not solo due to difficulty and NPS rules).

So one of the doctors at work let me borrow a book yesterday that gave me great tips on running.
I didn't skip my morning insulin dose DESPITE the fact that my blood sugar was 62 mg/dL. I ate my protein cheerios and drank my coffee and took half of the dose after I ate.
Blood sugar was 148 mg/dL before I left to run. Suspended the pump for the duration of the run, fueling every 2 miles or so...
Blood sugar after was 124 mg/dL!
Blood sugar before lunch is 108! I'm hoping this isn't a fluke and I'm finally making progress in controlling my sugar while I run. It feels like progress for sure!
