Hi Everybody.
So my sister got me started with MFP, and from that we got our whole family on board!
Anyhow, my dad keeps saying that he is not losing the weight. He has lost 9 pounds, which is a good start I think for being on only a month. He is eating 1500 calories which is actually less then I am eating right now.
I am trying to convince him that he should at least try to increase his calories by about 200-300 or so BEFORE exercise and he might see more results. If you have increased your calories and found better results please share! What caloric range did you start and how much did you increase?
I want as many success stories as possible. Thanks!
He could also probably use a few more fitness buddies. He's only got his family for support.

We were just talking about this today. Have him try zig zagging calories. LIke one day eat 1500, the next eat 1300, then go back up to 1400. Hopefully that will help jump start his loss again. I'm getting to the same boat. My losing is going REALLY slow right now. Also, maybe have him change up his exercise a little. If hes doing just cardio, add light weights to it. I hope others have some great feed back!0

I strarted with a 1200 calorie plan and dropped about 6 pounds the first month. Then my wieght loss stalled. I upped my calories by about 150-200 and have lost about a pound a week in the 8 weeks since then. My body needed the extra calories. I also eat almost all of my exercise calorie, trying to keep my net within 50-100 calories (under/over) once everything (both food and exercise) is logged in.0

My dad was on a 4 month plateau after losing quite a bit of weight. I finally convinced him to eat more. He has lost 7 more pounds in less than 3 weeks. A male should NET (calories from food minus calories burned by exercise) 1300 calories a day at the very least unless under doctor's supervision.0

I would suggest maybe he change his "activity level" or whatever it's called. If he's on sedentary, maybe bump it up to light active- and see how many calories that gives him....0

i also got started on 1200 calories, with no significant weightloss weekly. I then changed my goal to losing 1 lb a week, which gave m the allowance of 1350. I try to stay at 1300 calories daily. anyways, i'm not losing huge amounts (i am in a "healthy" weight range, so i can't expect to), but it's definitely going better now than it was! I also eat all my exercse calories..0

He is def not eating enough, men need more. I hope he is eating back his excerise calories! I recently increase mine to 1770 a day, just because Im very active. I learn my lesson before. My excerise calories are my extra. You and your dad can add me if you like. If he needs more convicing, get him to read more in the forums about Starvation Mode.0

I was never eating my exercise calories back and I stalled out. Now I eat them and am making steady progress. Your body needs fuel. And rest. Both do so much for metabolism.0

A male should never NET less than 1500 (I would go with 1600). That's the baseline number. IMO, I don't think we should ever eat below our BMR. That's the bare minimum for systems and organs to function.0 -
I think his job is kind of sedentary but he works out 3 times per week and takes a walk every day.0

I agree about eating below your BMR, but from my research being obese throws off the formula.0

You can eat below BMR if refeed/spike days are incorporated. My BMR is around 2050 but I typically eat 1800-1900 on my low days.
I agree with you on this. As long as you don't consume the small number continuously things should turn out okay (not good with words). I do this only because my food intake coincides with my energy expenditure. The more energy I expend the more I eat. The less I expend the less I eat. (This past Saturday I burned about 2500 calories - gardening - but on Sunday I only burned around 1600 - lazy day).0
