Hi Everyone,
I have been to the Dr numerous of times with blood work done and all seems fine...I lost alot of weight due to my diabetes but im now off of my medication..However I do have Acid Reflux/Gerd really bad and have a hard time eating...It seems my unintentional weight loss is I am not eating enough calories per day...Im at about 850..with the Refulx im so limited I just don't know what to eat anymore. When I was able to eat whatever I wanted lets just say I couldnt loose the weight now im struggling with gaining some weight...Im now down to 104 lbs

Can anyone help? I went to a nutritionist didnt do much for me since I need help with meals specifically...My next thought would be to see a Dietitian...

Thank You for listening

nutritionists(sorry to any out there) are not as well trained as dieticians. I definitely recommend seeing one. Being simple with your food intake will make things vastly easier. if you find even just 1 day's worth of food that works, eat that each and everyday. Variety is the spice of life they say, unless you have a food condition.
  • Catinlina im 4'9 so no its not too thin per say and I'm 46 yrs old. I have been to the Dr and the Gastro, again I guess I will seek other options and message boards..Thank you for your responses.

I have quite a lot of experience with acid reflux unfortunately. I have a hiatal hernia which is the main cause of it. One of the huge triggers for me are cooked tomatoes (sauces are a big one). I think it's the acid that does it. For now, I would avoid anything acidic or spicy. Have you tried Prilosec? You have to keep taking it though or it will stop working.
I strongly recommend you see your gastroenterologist and see about getting an endoscopy. It sucks, but it might tell you quite a bit. To keep your calories up in the meantime, I would recommend protein drinks (with limited dairy). They aren't too hard to keep down. Also, prop your head up a bit when you sleep to help keep the acid at bay.
  • Tech, I cant take PPI's of any kind as I have adverse reactions to them..I have become over sensitive to medication..There are certain things I can eat, my biggest issue is finding enough food throughout the day including lunch which is my worst meal so I can have enough Calories..I just cant seem to eat that much and am running out of ideas on what to eat if that makes sense...I cant even take Zantac anymore as I know get a rash from it..

At the end of the day I was just hoping someone with these issues could tell me the proper way to eat to so speak so I can try and gain some weight...I have bought 3 different acid reflux books for recipes, of most of them the recipes aren't great and seem to have almost nothing for lunches...

    Thank you for responding

My husband has this problem and is scheduled for an endoscopy. In the meantime, bland foods seem easiest for him. Small meals, no tomatoes, onions, anything spicy. You are also supposed to avoid caffeine, carbonated drinks, and coffee. He is OK with most meats, sandwiches, and soups. To deal with the weight loss, he is trying 4 small meals a day and supplementing with a high calorie nutritional drink. We are using the Target brand of Ensure Plus.
  • Genetic is your husband having weight loss issues too? I love soup and sandwiches but never know what will trigger and what wont. Love tuna but can't eat it...Soups if has tomato in it its a No No...May I ask what type of soups and Sandwiches does he eat..Believe it or not Coffee isn't a trigger for me...I was going to buy the Glucerna since Im diabetic I cant drink the Ensure..Thank You for your response...Im having an Endoscopy in December..

I suggest you start a database of what you eat and how your guts react to it. Be a scientist!
  • Sof I think your right, that is a great idea...I journal what I eat and then put down if I have symptoms or not...

Has your doctor tested for for H-Pylori? (Helicobacter pylori) It makes for severe GERD and can cause ulcers as well. It's defeated with a combo medicine that you take for a couple of months, and perhaps have to repeat in a year if it comes back.
  • NK Im having an Edoscope done next month I see the Gastro Nov 18th...A few people mentioned this H-Pylori isnt that Cancer? maybe I'm reading too much on the internet..My issue will be I can't take any Reflux Meds of any kind...

Have you tried the foodlist in the book Dropping the Acid? It's really been helpful for me. Dropping Acid: The Reflux Diet Cookbook & Cure https://www.amazon.com/dp/0982708319/ref=cm_sw_r_awd_TAzuub19HZARY

Yes, he lost quite a bit of weight. OK soups are cream of broccoli (most cream soups), chicken soup, vegetable soup without tomatoes, beef soup. Sandwiches - grilled cheese, turkey, ham, beef, chicken salad, egg salad, chicken. Mayo, no mustard, No tomatoes.

Hope you are following up with a doctor.

No ... it is not cancer ... although it can eventually lead to that if it is not treated. I had it and it was only found by accident when they were doing an Endoscope and took a culture to biopsy.

acouple of things that used to give me relief ... you might try ....
1 ... fresh ginger grated into boiled water and steeped to make a tea.
2 ... a shot glass of Bitters ... found in the supermarket where the cocktail mixes are sold. This also contains ginger so I think it's the ginger that helped.

    Good Luck

I have GERD and I'm on medication for it. I'd be talking to a doctor for sure. There is no reason for you to be losing weight in an unhealthy way because of something treatable.
  • Its only treatable TheVir if one can take meds, I can't and I'm only eating about 800 calories a day it seems since I've been tracking it...I Pray this weight loss isn't any sort of cancer, I have blood work done every 4 months since Im type 2 diabetic although my numbers are great so my Dr took me off of my Meds...my blood work is Great all my counts are perfect, have always been while losing so much of this weight...

Thank You NK I will definitely try the Ginger...I did Try the Mothers Apple Cider Vinegar and it didn't do anything for me...I Hope that we can get this figured out its very frustrating..
