Changed goals

I just changed my goal from Lightly active (which I thought I was, but not) to sedentary (I only work 3 hours per day and home rest of the time) and it lowered my calories from 1530 to 1334. YIKES! Not sure I like that. I want to lose about .05 per week. I am currently 142 and want to get to 135 by years' end. Should I change that to 1 per week?

You are moving around less, so yeah you need fewer calories. MFP is not the website you should use to calculate your energy needs. Exrx.net or health-calc.com will be worth checking out, then subtract 10% from the highest number you get. Set as custom goal. eat that for a month or two, if you don't lose about .5lbs per week or ~2lbs a month then lower the cals by 100 and monitor.

If you do NEAT, then calculate without exercise included and then eat back exercise. If you calculate TDEE then include your exercise in the average and subtract 10%, set as goal, don't log/eat back exercise.

Walk more ...add in the calories earned

Then if you do nothing that's your basic calories, if you walk say 10000 steps you'll get another few hundred to eat

    (Or workout)

I don't understand - you work 3 hours and you're at home the rest ...if there's a reason you can't walk round the block a few times, or to the shops, walk round your house

Or do a youtube exercise video

    Or jog on the spot

    Unless you don't want to

I can easily stand/walk for 3 hours in a day staying home. cooking, laundry, showering, getting food or drinks, etc. You're probably more active than you think, and MFP is again not the tool you want to use to estimate your calorie needs.

Also your goal is set at ~1500, without exercise... so there's no reason for you to be eating only 1200. Unless you had started changing how you eat without updating the goal. Which doesn't make sense... basically you've been undereating already without having to have changed your activity level.

I do leslie sansone videos 3-4 times per week. Guess I will start wearing my pedometer that tracks steps and see what I do. I do sit a lot at the computer or in front of TV at home when not doing housework.

I'm not getting how you could not be more active if you only work 3 hours per day. If you're basically at home all day, how come you can't go for a walk? Why can't you do other forms of exercise/activity. Increased activity = increased energy requirements...calories are a unit of energy...thus, increased activity = increased calories = more food.

I'm really not understanding this. If I only worked 3 hours per day, I'd be a fitness god...

if you change it to one per week you will get even less calories. Stick with 0.5 and do more exercise, so you can eat more calories.

You're not answering the question. We understand you DON'T move, we don't understand WHY.

oh sorry. I guess I just never thought about it. It's not that I can't. I walk for mail, walk in grocery stores etc. Never thought about walking around the house. I guess I will try to move around more at home instead of sitting in front of the computer and tv all day until I leave for work. I started wearing my step counter about an hour ago and already at 400 steps.

You can also walk out your front door and go for a walk each day.

Yes explore your neighbourhood, head to parks and walk right round them

An hour or so outside walking will earn you a sandwich

Oooookkkkkkk....so you sit around all day...that's not an excuse to not get steps in. If you have a step goal of 10000 steps..then get up. Go for a walk. That's how you earn extra calories, if you're using the NEAT method...It's not that hard to figure out. Sitting around all day is part of why weight was gained, so change that behavior and become more active.

getting too cold for outdoor walks, but still might be able to do them a little. So will walk in the house more. What is the NEAT method.

Honestly it just sounds like laziness to me with having so much time on your hands. You can always do the 3 mile, 4 mile or 5 mile walk from Leslie Sansone 3 -4 times a week. If you want to eat more than, you will have to workout and be more active.

I'm going for a run today and it's 40 degrees. Sure there's a point where it's dangerous to go walking outside, but it shouldn't be an excuse. Get a sweater? Once you start walking, you warm up.

NEAT, is mostly what MFP does (from what I understand, if I'm wrong someone please correct me!)...so basically you have your calorie allotment and it doesn't include extra workouts. So every extra walk you get, earns you calories. That's a very basic explination, I'm really bad at explaining things like that and if someone else could step in I'd love you forever.

Look I don't mean to be obvious or mean here but one of the reasons you are overweight is because you don't move enough ...it's true of all of us...and whilst you lose weight by calorie defecit and don't need to exercise that doesn't mean to say it doesn't have lots of benefits to get your *kitten* moving more ...not least the extra food

Do you own a coat, scarf, gloves, boots? Put em on and get out there and stop making excuses ...

Thank you for the kick in the butt! I needed it. Yes, laziness I am guilty of. FYI...I am at 900 steps in about 90 minutes. That's how long I been wearing my step counter. I am going to try for 2-4k steps per day to start and work my way up.

This is basically how it works, yes. Although NEAT should include any normal activity you do even if it's exercise. e..g if you always walk your dog daily, just include it in your average.

But as for the walking outside thing... here it can easily get to -30 celsius. Without considering wind chill! And it can get VERY windy. Plus it's already getting dark by 7pm now, will soon be dark at like 4pm, sunrise at like 9am. Canada is not outside-exercise-friendly.

    Easy solution: move more.
If you want to eat more calories per day you need to burn more calories. You say you sit a lot- just getting up every 15 minutes and jogging in place for one or two minutes will allot you more calories to eat.

I go on walks to up my steps. 3 miles is about 6500 steps and takes 50-60 minutes or so to complete. That plus just living pushes me to 10k. I have a massive blister on the ball of my right foot, so no brisk walk today, but I may go for an amble anyway.

OP, if you don't want to exercise, that's okay, lol. You don't need an excuse. It's okay to do what you want. If you want to lose by just dieting, then do that.

If you want to go for a walk or do some other kind of exercise, then do that.

What do you want to do?

I am up to 6k steps today and I started wearing my pedometer around 1 pm today. I will wear it until I go to bed. I am also going to eat lighter lunches because I am always hungry in evenings and want 2nd helpings sometimes and snack.

I just jogged 4.5km in 6 Celsius wearing ColdGear long running tights, a tank top under a running jacket and a toque. I run faster in the cold 'cause I want to get my *kitten* back to the house and into a warm shower. No such thing as too cold!

That said, you can lose weight without exercise do long as you're eating at a deficit. TBH, I exercise mostly because I want to be healthier, not just thinner but a little part of me is just motivated by the extra calories I get to eat when I'm done!

I agree, you need to move. With so little to lose, you need to keep your logging tight and earning those extra calories can make all the difference.
