If you are new to Indian, try butter chicken, beef vindaloo, daal, rice and naan. Eggplant is delish so are potatoes. Try Samosa for appetizer.0

I like Jalfrezi, Pasanda, Saag, Bhuna, Pathia... depending on how I am feeling.0

If you're watching your calories, stay away from high-calorie breads like naan and rice, and try some plain chapatis/rotis or dosas if available. And try to avoid creamy curries, like Chicken Tikka Masala. The spicier the curry, the less calories, usually. Paneer or aloo gobi (potatoes and cauliflowers) are also good choices. Of course, avoid deep fried foods like samosas and go easy on Indian sweets. They're often incredibly sweet, so you can imagine what goes into them. However, if by "best meal" you mean most awesome experience ever without the need to count calories, then try everything! Especially items from a tandoor like butter chicken and naans, which are difficult to replicate outside the restaurant.0

What a terrific link! And lots of great suggestions from other folks.
FWIW, when we eat out (which is almost always Indian because that's the part of the world where I live, LOL), we tell them to hold the rice and bread (which does get looks and tends to start a conversation!) Those are huge calorie bombs and tend to be pretty empty, plus not exactly the most exciting part of a meal. (Although sauces in rice really are pretty good.) But that way we can eat more of what we want
If you have the option of a thali with several vegetable and meat options, you can sample and see what you like.0 -
It's weird how there are trends on the boards. Lately, questions about Indian food seem to be popular.
My weight gain was in part due to my ordering Indian about twice a week on average (and of course my choices when I do). I now go out for Indian more like once a month, and if I'm trying to keep calories down go with the tandoori (chicken, of course, but sometimes lamb instead, although that has more calories), plus naan instead of rice. Then I have a little saag paneer that's shared with the whole table. This balances my refusal to give up the items I love with the desire not to blow a ridiculous number of calories. (I also usually keep my calories down at lunch.) I'm sure a reasonable amount of rice would be better than naan, but I really love naan.
On rare occasions I just don't worry about it and get lamb vindaloo or some other curry. In that case I just try to be reasonable in portion size, especially with the rice and naan.
If you don't go all that often, I'd say make it a special occasion and enjoy.0
