starting today!

Hi ya'll! Here goes... I am beginning my diet today! But I'm scared! Yesterday I spent a lot of time looking at people's success stories and pictures. They look awesome! Will I get there? What if I fail? Will I have to exercise? I know I need to. But I'm so out of shape! I tried a couch potato to 5k workout the other day, & I couldn't even do the first workout! I guess I'm not even as fit as a couch potato!a At 5 foot 6 inches and 215 pounds I know I'm not fit at all! How can this MNdgirl get fit? I'm 24 years old and I need help! Any motivation, tips, advice friends would be welcome! Thank you!

If you are serious about trying to run, Couch to 5k is great. You probably just need to slow down. There is a great group for that: C25k Group

You can do this! I did it at 50, you can at 24!
  • Thank you!!! I needed that! So you did it at 50?

I started trying to lose weight at 48, hit a plateau about 9 months in and decided I needed to do something different, so I started Couch to 5k. I ran my first 5k last year and have since done several 5ks and a couple of 10ks. I'm planning to run my first half marathon next spring. I am more fit at 50 than I have ever been. No more high blood pressure, no more achy joints, and my resting heart rate hovers around 50. (I also ride my bicycle a lot!)

I've been at my current (goal) weight for about a year. I'm always open to new friends. My diary is open, but be aware that I eat pretty much whatever I want only in smaller portions. I exercise more so I can eat more. At 5'3", my maintenance calories are pretty low.

Step one, don't use the term diet anymore. Think of this a a journey and a lifestyle change, a diet will end but a lifestyle change can go on forever if you choose. The running was a huge part of losing weight but it didn't stop there. At 53 I am in the best shape I have ever been in. I dropped my cholesterol over fifty points. Start slow, I did a lot of walking and then mixed in short runs. Be prepared to get fitted for some running shoes at a running store. My first race was a half marathon I entered after seeing it in the paper the day before after my morning run. I think my second will be the Nov.11th. I am so happy being the new me. It won't happen overnight but it will happen, give it time and stay with it!
