Hey guys!

Lately I've been using Almond milk with my cereal and oatmeal to save on the calories since I hate skimmed milk. I always buy the shelf stable type. The first brand I got was Alpro almond milk unsweetened. It was alright, but it taste really watery and was only 2% Almond. It was really low in calorie though. Then I decided to try Provamel Almond unsweetened milk since it is 7% Almonds. It has a little more calories than Alpro, but I figure it's because it has more percentage of Almonds in it. I really loved the Provamel Almond milk and thought it was delicious. The problem though is on the 3rd day of opening it, the milk turned very thick like yogurt. It also didn't taste right. I don't know what could've happened since it says it stays good for 5-9 days after opening it. I tried shaking it also since I thought that could be the problem, but that didn't help either. Do you think it could've gone bad in only 3 days? Has anyone else had a strange experience with the brand Provamel?

Sorry if you guys never heard of these brands, there from Europe :)

you could try calling the manufacturer - it doesn't sound right to me and they will probably want to know they have a batch that is expiring too quickly which could indicate a problem in their manufacture process. Chances are good they'd send you a coupon for future purchases if you're interested in buying more, too (at least, in the US they would)

Usually when things develop a distinct odor and or change texture excessively- it went bad. I'd return it to the store with a receipt.

All the almond milks I've gotten from the shelf as opposed to the refrigerated section say on the box that once it's opened it has to be refrigerated. That it's only shelf stable while it's unopened, basically. Did you double check the box?
  • I buy silk almond milk unsweetened original (30 calories per 1 cup serving). It remains liquid and smells fine and has about a 2 month refrigerator freshness!

Wow 2 months! Both SIlk and Blue diamond say to consume within 7 days after opening, it's probably still good after 2 weeks. In the fridge for 2 months and it's not funky?

I plow through so much almond milk that it doesn't last 5 days much less a week.

  • You are right! Sorry, I guess I wasn't thinking clearly. Unopened, 2 months refrigerated, yes. Opened, the carton does indeed say 7-10 days. And, come to think of it, once I open a carton, I think it's usually gone within 10 days!

I emailed Provamel, so hopefully they will respond soon with a answer of why this happened. :)

I gotta ask, why on earth did you drink the almond milk when it resembled yogurt?

If I grab an apple off the shelf and it has more hair than my cat - I don't eat it. Milk should resemble milk. If it looks like yogurt or cottage cheese then it's not a good idea to try it anyway. Just toss it and move on.

First of all, I added some to my smoothie and I didn't realize the texture since I wasn't paying attention. I couldn't figure out after what smoothie why I was sick and having diarrhea. Then later when I went to make cereal, I noticed it was yogurt and clumpy. I didn't think it could possible be bad since I only opened it 3 days ago and it's suppose to last 7-10 days. I tried shaking it, but that didn't help either. I did google it and some people were saying it's normal for some brands of Almond milk to be thicker than others and might even be clumpy if not shaken enough. Since it was only my second box of Almond milk ever and my first time trying that brand, I wasn't sure what to think. I decided I should try the Almond milk to see if it was alright and I didn't want to waste almost the whole carton unless I had too, especially because it's expensive. I took a few spoon full bites and it was really disgusting. It tasted sour also. After that, I threw the cereal away and didn't want anymore to eat. After eating those few spoon fulls, my diarrhea got worse and I had massive stomach pain. So I threw it away because anyone else could get sick from it.

My rule of thumb is always when in doubt throw it out.

true :) I should've listened to my gut feeling, but I thought I was over worrying.

Day 3 and the diarrhea finally stopped. But my stomach is still on fire constantly. I think I'm scared to drink Almond milk ever again which is a shame.
