Yucky question about bodily functions, read at own risk!

Before anyone asks, I am seeing a doctor TOMORROW about this, just looking for opinions here.

For the last five days I have had diarrhea approximately twice per day, once in the morning when I wake up and once at night. It is not pleasant. The diarrhea started the morning after I had three pints of pumpkin hard cider on an empty stomach and then came home and ate leftover indian food. I have no other symptoms- no fever, no headaches, and since I'm not running to the bathroom every five minutes I am not dehydrated (though I have been constantly alternating water and gatorade just in case.) Other than being gassy and having a gurgling stomach and low appetite nothing else is out of the ordinary.

And no, its not ebola ;)

Anyhow, since it carried through the weekend I really thought it was due to having alcohol every day (at a wedding and rehearsal dinner) but I had no alcohol yesterday and today was the worst day yet. Also I've always been a drinker and never experienced anything like this before.

I have occasionally had loose stools when stressed and when not getting enough fiber and iron, but nothing like this.

I just took a couple of activated charcoal tablets to see if they give me a more comfortable night, and as I said I'm seeing the doctor in the morning and don't believe its anything serious due to my lack of fever and other symptoms.

This is what I am wondering- Could this be food poisoning from the indian food? Has it lasted too long? Has anyone experienced more than a few days in a row of the big D without any other symptoms before? I've never suspected having any allergies before. I'm hoping its not IBS or something similar that will need to be managed constantly :/ . I did recently do a course of antibiotics due to an infected tooth that ended about a week prior to the D. I'm wondering if that might be connected. However my belly has been slightly more problematic than usual over the last 6 months or so, so I'm thinking something is out of whack, maybe my levels of good bacteria, etc.

First hand experiences welcome!

    I was hoping for something grosser, after the warning. This was pretty mild.

    I have no idea what is wrong with you, but hope it all turns out to be nothing. :)

    Mixing Indian food with pumpkin hard cider is risky business.

    When you say you've, "always been a drinker." What do you mean? If we are talking about heavy drinking you could just be destroying your insides.

    well, I am 25, I drink on weekends. I hardly think I have destroyed my insides. But sure, I've had hangovers. On this particular wedding weekend I had between 3 and 4 drinks per night, pretty much on par with everyone else.

    I agree that combo was a poor choice! But I expected it to only last the next day. I guess part of what I'm wondering is if it might last longer.

    It's probably just food poisoning.

    The test at the doctor's office for that is interesting.

    I had something similar, although drinking did not come before it. The diarrhea actually got worse, with cramping, before it got better. A nurse told me it was probably norovirus. Mine went away in about 4 days.

    Not to be alarmist, but I had a dodgy meal at Chez Henri in Cambridge, MA... had food poisoning symptoms for a month. Lost a few pounds and gained a sensitivity to wheat. All in all, it was a lot of fun.

  • I'd be willing to put money on it being the antibiotics. They kill off the good bacteria in your gut and things get out of whack. Some probiotics or several servings of active culture yogurt will fix you up if that's what it is.

    Oh gosh, that doesn't sound fun.

    I have considered the impact of the antibiotics, as well as the possibility of food poisoning. Since i don't have other symptoms and there's not too much that can be done, my guess is the doctor will say eat plain foods, hydrate, and call me if you get a fever. We will see....

    It happened to me when I was eating Greek yogurt and it went away when I switched to regular yogurt. By any chance are you eating that?

    Eating yogurt will put the bacteria you need back in your system if the antibiotics were the cause. I had a similar experience years ago and that did the trick. Good luck.

    I had this after a bad trip to a chinese buffet late in the week when the leftovers start to get rancid. Anyway, I thought once I cleaned out what I had eaten, the diarrhea would just stop.
    It did not, and I'm good at math, but how did 2 plates of chinese food turn into 5 gallons of caboose sludge?

    Could be food poisoning, be thankful it is just the squits if that is what it is. The two occasions I had it, I was up all night with explosive emissions from both ends and the most appalling nausea I have ever known. One incident was from prawns in a sandwich and no idea the other, but boy, I hope to never experience it again.

    My guess would be food poisoning or, if you were on a strong antibiotic like levaquin, could be related to that too. Last time I was on levaquin I destroyed my toilet.
