-Wishing you were lighter

-OTC diet pills/supplements

-Sweat suits

-Detoxes/Cleansings

- Eliminating a food group (no, candy is not a food group)

-Eating 300-800 calories per day. And then exercising. You'll lose for a while, yes. Mostly muscle. But in the long run, this is going to harm your health, your psyche and your metabolism.

-Not eating after X PM. Or not eating carbs after X PM.

-Praying to lose weight.

-Massive amounts of steady-state cardio

Etc., etc., etc.

Feel free to add things to the list that you've seen on the forums which are not going to help anyone get to their goals.............

sounds about right. I believe this should be another one:

    - only / mainly eating one food group.

Hear Hear !! on that statement. I have to shake my head and wonder why so many of my MFP friends eat the same freaking foods 7 days a week. 4 weeks a month and so on and so on. Its probably because that one day the predicted weight dropped really low and they thought "If I just keep eating such and such I will lose weight..." well you will, but what happens when you go in to maintaining that weight. are you going to have X for lunch everyday for the rest of your life? boring !

its a life style/ mindset change.

    End rant .......sorry

    Excellent!!!

How about, mass calorie burns. If you are eating back exercise cals as you should be, at the end of the day you STILL have only a 500 cal deficit. And you are worn out and possibly injured. Focus on quality rather than quantity.

    Weight loss surgery.

It works for some, but they still have to learn how to eat right, and exercise, or they will start gaining eventually. I've seen several people who had surgery, only to gain it all back in a few years.

Yep. Had mine 8 years ago. Gained back almost half of what I lost. This time making the lifestyle change I was not prepared to make my first go-round.

This made me LOL. Probably not good if that miracle pill was directly or indirectly involved in the slaughter of a goat or chicken :P

Waiting for the next day, week or month to start a healthy lifestyle or get back on track
    depriving yourself... everything in moderation

b12 shots and appetite suppressants yea you can eat cheetos and drink beer all you like and still lose weight.... works until you get to your goal, but if you don't learn what we are already doing here at MFP, portion control and better choices, you will gain it all back and then some. I have yet to see a single person I know (and there are several) spend all their money just to get to goal weight and then blow up bigger than before.
  • I would agree with most of the statements of the OP, but this one jumped out at me as a truth hidden among the myths:
-Not eating after X PM. Or not eating carbs after X PM.

Eating within a few hours of bedtime causes insulin to suppress the release of Human Growth Hormone and DHEA, two fat-burning hormones. Carbs especially raise insulin levels.

Very interesting. I would love to do more research on that....it sounds fascinating. I question if this will vary among individuals. I regularly eat before bedtime, and have yet to see it negatively influence my weight. But for the next person, it could be a key factor.

From the articles I've read, they say it depends on each individual. A person who has an insulin sensitivity should limit their carbs since their bodies have a bigger tendency to store those sugars as fat. Sometimes I think a lot of Nutrition, and fitness is speculation, and guessing. I see a lot of ideas that were taught as science years ago debunked as myth today.
