Doing well! But I love to party.

Hey guys! New to the community/app/so on, but been counting calories for about a month now and dropped 5 lbs!

One question I have about the effectiveness of calorie counting: I'm a party animal! I really like to drink and play music with my friends.

This weekend, for example, we're doing a "dance/drink all night" sort of party that's a potluck. Banjos, fiddles, square dancing, so on. It's also a big potluck of southern fried food and cheap beer/liquor. You can guess what that means--- I'll be chasing tail all night and having a blast, but also getting fat.

So how do you handle "binges" in your calorie counting routine? Especially when your self-control is low in party situations. Should I, say, do better all week and then plan on a huge calorie day?

Thanks in advance,

Have a few drinks - but 'chasing tail' as you so delightfully put it is far more effective when you're not a drunken, slobbering mess of a fool :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

cut back all week to save calories, exercise to add cals .. and know how much you've got to play with on your party night

pre-log what you'll have .. number of beers, food

don't get drunk or you'll blow it - get tipsy, watch your mates when they're bladdered and laugh at them - whole new perspective in life awaits you

maybe you'll even have a better time of it without the after-effects hangover

    You mentioned square dancing...
    Do a lot of it.
One night off the calorie count is not the worst thing. Just try to stay in control and not let it turn into a bender.

Try the 5:2 fasting diet. On fast days you eat only 500 calories a week. These might help compensate for your bad days.

And make sure you dance a lot!!

Drink a glass of water between alcoholic drinks and try not to binge.

Drink less & you can still have a good time, it's about attitude, you don't need alcolhol to have fun.

You will just have to stay focused and stick to moderation. You will be dancing around and that burns a good amount of calories per hour.

Also yes, I would eat a little less calories during the week, so that you have a larger calorie allotment to work with on the weekend. Maybe do an extra workout as well, even though you will be dancing.

I have learned my limits now when I am out having a good time. Just because you are partying doesn't mean you have to eat all the foods and drink all the alcohol. Know your limits.

Go, have fun, try to pre-log as much as you can and dance a lot to offset extra calories. Life happens-learning to use moderation and still LIVE life is what this is all about. Remember, its one night.

Bring a healthy dish to the potluck, even if it's just lightly breaded frozen chicken strips that you heat in the oven and throw in a tupperware. Drink light beer. Dance a lot. Work out during the day so you feel less inclined to go buck wild with the food and drinks (I find working out sets me up for the day). Congrats on your 5 pound weight loss.

I used to party a lot. I started my weight loss journey and got frustrated that my weekends were ruining my hard work. So I stopped partying so hard. After awhile I realized I was partying so hard because I had low self-esteem, etc. So I stopped partying. I had a lot of push-back from my friends who didn't understand my lifestyle change. However, I am much happier and thinner now. Don't get me wrong - I still go out and have a good time, and even drink too much once and awhile....but it's like once every two months, not twice a weekend. At this infrequence I don't notice the scale increasing for more than a week after a crazy night.

That's just my personal story though. You need to find what works for you and prioritize what is most important in your life.

I like to drink and go to a lot of social events. I bring healthier foods (eg oven roasted vegetables - SO GOOD) and lower-calorie drinks (vodka & soda water, wine) to try to minimize the damage...
