Epson Pulsense- anyone else obsessed? (fit. tracker + HRM)

I've been interested in continuous HR monitoring for a couple years now and ever since I heard about Pulsense back in February, I've been a little obsessed (okay, maybe a lot- even google has stopped counting how many times I visited the website). Anyways, it was released in Europe this week and now I'm fretting over if I should pre-order it (~$230) or wait for it to hit the Epson stores where it originally looked like it would be listed for $199, but now there's rumors about it being $280. Anyone heard anything reliable?

The main reason I've been putting off pre-ordering is because I want reviews to come out before I buy it. Not because I don't think it's going to be good, but because I know I have unrealistically high expectations just due to waiting for this thing for so long and I'm hoping that reading reviews will make it somewhat realistic before I get my watch and am disappointed.

For those that aren't as obsessed but want more information:
UK Product Spec Sheet, App Demo, + User Guide- http://www.epson.co.uk/gb/en/viewcon/corporatesite/cms/index/11219/
Only review I could find- http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/08/pulsesense-activity-trackers.html
Web based Pulsense View App- https://go-wellness.epson.com/pulsense-view/completeAccount/

I do have a couple concerns about it though:
1- Currently android support restricted to the Samsung Galaxy series
2- No way to add exercise to the log if you couldn't wear the watch (i.e. swimming, martial arts, ect)
3- Auto sleep detect- while I'm glad they included a backup plan with the semi-auto detect option, it also has me a little worried that they had to include a backup plan...

However, I am psyched that this thing is a continuous heart rate monitor and displays all cumulative workout data for the month in correct heart rate zones! It's going to be great knowing exactly how much time was spent in aerobic, threshold, anaerobic, which I'm sure there's some combination of phone app + HR monitor with strap that does that, but this thing is also able to show you when your resting heart rate hasn't recovered because you pushed to hard, it includes the smaller things that most people don't bother to wear HR monitors for- like the mile or so dog walks, running errands, ect. If you're wearing the tracker and your hr reaches a zone, it is added to the monthly total and therefore you get a complete picture of your cardiovascular training!

Anyways, just thought I would share my excitement and maybe find some others that feel the same.

I hadn't seen this one. It looks pretty good but as always, who knows with first gen stuff. I kind of stopped watching since I am waiting for the Atlas Wearables tracker that I pre-ordered.

I used to wait and wait until the perfect phone came out, then I realized, I would be waiting forever. Maybe something for you to think about if you have the money. Get it and make the best of it. If it is really really bad, knowing it is from Epson you probably have a decent chance of returning it.

    Just food for thought.

As far as the sleep detect, as a developer I can see adding a backup since the semi-auto probably got developed first and then an automatic way was added.

Logging is probably a software change, easier than hardware so I wouldn't worry about it. Possibly an update in the next revision.

I can't see any reason it wouldn't work on any Android phone with the right hardware (ANT+, BLE, or whatever). Possibly only "officially" supported on Samsung.
  • Hi,
I've had the Pulsense 500 watch for almost a week now. It does appear to be a good product and can accurately measure my heart rate, sleep, calories etc. It needs to be tightened up when exercising to get an accurate bpm. The only other issue with it is I cannot seem to change the clock display to 24hour despite setting it in the View App. But that's only a minor issue. Overall so far so good and I'm glad I bought it. It does give me an accurate view of my daily activity and helps motivate me to do more to lose weight and get fit.
  • Hi Debbiear31!

How has the Pulsense been working? What types of exercise are you using it with? Like the original poster I've been searching for a 24 hour heart rate tracker that works good during exercise. I tried the new Microsoft band and for me it did not track very good... My last hope was the Basis Peak but today I somehow came across the Pulsense 500. But the weirdest thing there are still zero reviews of Pulsense anywhere! It's like its a secret or something.
