What is everyone's favorite type of yoga? Where do you do it and why do you do it?

I recently added different all of the different types of yoga to the database (because not all types of yoga burn the same amount of calories!) and it got me thinking about why I started in the first place.

I love yoga. It's not just strength and stretching, it's also moving meditation and making your body healthier. It's a wonderful thing that has changed my life for the better.

Did you know if you weigh 180 pounds and you do one hour of Vinyasa yoga, you can burn almost 400 calories in a 90 minute class? (I burn way more than that, because I'm a chubby mf) It's not as easy as it looks!

Also, I wanted to share this video, for anyone who is scared of trying yoga for the first time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v7AYKMP6rOE

And this one, for my more experienced yogi friends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cBPP_izKKSs

My favorite type of yoga (so far) has been Vinyasa or flow yoga. I take classes at a nearby yoga studio. I also recently purchased a few dvds to do it at home.

I do yoga for a variety of reasons. I love the way my body feels after a class . It's almost as if I've just enjoyed a full body massage. I enjoy the sense of peace and blissed out way I feel after classes. I sleep better on days that I've done yoga. My posture has improved along with my flexibility. It has also been great for migraine prevention and relieving lower back pain. I've noticed that I've had a lot less headaches and migraines since practicing regularly.

I also really enjoy the emphasis on going at your own pace and respecting your body's limits. It feels great now to see how I have improved since first starting classes again and I love when I finally feel like I've got a good handle on one of the more advanced asanas like side plank :D .

I love the class atmosphere as well. I feel like I'm being pushed more in classes as opposed to just doing yoga at home but also the sense of community is great. All of the instructors have been invaluable when it comes to suggesting modifications for an asana that's either too difficult or increasing difficulty when a position has gotten easy or not as challenging.

I've been doing alignment based yoga for 4 years. Absolutely LOVE it. My yogi is recovering from surgery, so I've been doing some at home, but it's just not the same as being in class. It gave me pain relief in my back when a year's worth of PT didn't make a difference. I've seen so many benefits, and am really looking forward to getting back to class!

I guess a form of Iyengar - I hold poses for 30 - 60 secs before moving on to the next. I have worked out a flow of my own and currently practice once a week. lifting and running take up the other days.

I so remember this feeling from my first Yoga instructor... she was very open, kind, really focused on each of us and as you shared helped with modifications. Also walked around and said nice job after she'd shown you one you'd struggled with a bit. Very encouraging peaceful class.

I love how she ended each class as well... some instructors I've been to... it's abruptly ended and it's like we're dismissed. A strange feeling and not a calming way to end a yoga session...least for me.

I really love ashtanga because it's deeply structured and one of the most physically challenging. I enjoy the meditative aspects, and find it's a nice addition to my usual strength routine.

Vinyassa is fun too, I like how fluid it can be.

I like Vinayasa... and there's one called POWER YOGA at the Y, it's a lot of attempting inversions and falling all over the place. It's fun play.

I practice Iyengar yoga. I don't worry about calorie burn.

There is a group on MFP open to all people, if you like to discuss yoga:

I like yin for when I want to relax, and vinyasa for when I want to work up a good sweat. I love how I feel after I'm done, both mentally and physically. I'm more accepting of my flaws because even though I'm overweight I can still do all sorts of poses with this body. I also sleep better when I practice on a regular basis.

Classes are usually called alignment yoga when the teacher is not a certified Iyengar yoga instructor. It takes a long time to be a certified Iyengar teacher, so sometimes the teacher is working to become certified; at other times, the teacher does not want to become certified but teaches in technical style. Or some other reason.
Anyway, alignment based classes usually spend longer in the poses. You usually repeat the poses for some action the teacher has mentioned. And the teacher will tell you exactly where to put your feet, hands, etc. Frequently, there will be alternative poses for those that can't do and props for better alignment.
