Q for Runners... When is a race a LONG race?

Everyone's heard of athletes carb-loading before a race, and I know that's only for long races. A 5k is too short to warrant any changes to one's diet beforehand.

So at what point is a race considered a long race? One long enough that you should alter your eating habits a day or two before? A 10k? Half marathon? Only for a full marathon?

I'm participating in a 5 miler tomorrow. I'm never one to avoid carbs at any rate, but I wonder if maybe I should have a wee bit more than normal for dinner tonight. I'm only looking at this as a long jog... My goal is just to finish without walk breaks and have it under my belt.

Bump! I have a 10k mud run next weekend, then a regular 10k the next. I've been wondering the same thing. Although, I regularly run 6 miles and I've had no need to carb load, so I doubt it applies to a standard 10k. But I'm thinking the mud run, which is going to be an absolute test of stamina, will be a different story.

I think you should go by time rather than distance. Long is generally any race where you will be running more than an hour.

I think that depends on the person. I only take in "extra" carbs when I'm doing a half marathon or more. That works for me because I eat carbs on a regular basis and don't limit them like some people do when they are trying to lose weight. I opt for complex carbs and I make sure I keep well hydrated days before any race. If you aren't restricting your carbs you should be fine to eat normal for the 5 miler but have an extra banana beforehand if you are worried. Good luck on your run and most of all have fun!!!

Scott is right. I've heard you should only have to worry about fuel after an hour or more of running. As far as carb loading goes, I would be a little careful as any change to your diet can have adverse affects on your digestive system. Also, runnersworld.com recommends upping your carbs 2 days (or more) before your race & only having something light the night before.

    HTH

P.S. A big GOOD LUCK for your race!

Thanks, all! Good to know.

I'll likely finish in about 50 minutes... providing the race is still happening! There's been minor flooding in the area from all the rain.
