How long can you plank for?

Hi All,

Just wondering how long others can plank for? I can just about manage a wobbly 30 secs but my 64 year old inspirational mother can plank for over 2 mins! Just wondering whether I'm a weakling or if she is He-man in disguise?

I get bored after about 40 seconds or so. That's easy though.
  • It helps to breath steadily whilst in position, many people hold their breath and then get the shakes. increase in small stages.
    I do 30 - 40 secs but do 3 or 4 reps

I've been working on different planks for awhile now and I think they helped with my pushups as well as core strength.

I do both the basic and forearm for 90 seconds each, then 2 side planks for 60 seconds, and a reverse plank (a new one for me) for 50 seconds this morning. I don't particularly enjoy doing them but I think they've made me stronger so I force myself to do them. I also started doing plank single arm rows last week, not very well though. ;)

If you're having trouble and want to do them longer, just keep adding 5 seconds every few days you do them.

72 seconds currently, I do one 3 times a week ( when I'm done working out)
  • 2 minutes and then I release, I vary it up, plank with leg lifts, one armed planks, etc

I did the 30 day challenge to get up to 2 minutes. The 30 days dragged out to 3 months... but I can do 2:30. I do it before I run because afterwards I don't have any strength left.

Yes, they are. I started listing the things I am thankful for while planking. Everything from people, situations, etc. It kills two birds at once - being grateful for what you DO have and planking.

I can't seem to break 1 minute. Depends on the day, though – sometimes 30 seconds is all I can do. :) It helps me to watch the time.

I haven't checked since June. But, even at 268 back then I could plank for 45 seconds. Blew my trainer away. I should see how I do now that I'm over 30 pounds lighter and have been working out. (Pushups are a different story!)

2.5 min I'm up to for a continuous plank. When I go to do 3min I have to add a 10 second break in there somewhere to make it :/ Working on it!

We do it in Crossfit after workouts sometimes and the time is 2 minutes. I've never not made the 2 minutes, but I don't know what my max effort plank would be because I've never tried it on my own. I'm sure doing it in a group makes me do it longer because I'm competitive on stupid little stuff like that.I usually do hollow holds instead of planks on my own and I can't even get past 90 seconds on those right now.

Wow, thanks for all of ur answers. I will take some of these tips, I like the idea of adding 5 seconds each time. Seems like my mam is not He-man in disguise, maybe she is She-ra though!? Going to practice in secret!

I'm doing a challenge atm, up to 50 seconds so far. Arms starting to shake the last few seconds but I'm holding it so far.
  • I've never try to find out how long I can do plank for. My plank routine usually is: normal plank > left side plank > normal > right side plank > normal > repeat two more times. 30 seconds on each. So it's about 12 sets of 30 secs in a row with no rest. I fumble a bit but I try to keep the transition as smooth as possible.
