Not a good way to start my monday

I have been running 3-5 miles a day for the last couple weeks, and have been eating decent (not perfect) but definately better then I was a few months ago. I got on the scale today after my 5 mile run and it showed I have gained 6 lbs since last Monday.....ummmm what? Its possible that it is water weight, but other than that I am not sure what happened.
Makes me even more determined now to reach my goal.

With that being said I will be focusing even harder on my diet for the next 30 days, avoid any refined sugars, watch my carb intake, and sodium levels.

With the holiday seasons coming up this will be even a harder challenge for me.

Anyone in the same boat?

I'd be really surprised if that 6 lbs. was actual weight! I'm sure it's a water fluctuation type of thing. The only thing I'd say is check the scale just for tracking purposes, but don't let that number determine your day or week. Keep running. Enjoy the way it makes you FEEL and gradually improve your eating habits. You'll see results, I'm sure!

This. Our bodies are weird, and sometimes hold onto water because it wants too. My guess is water weight, either sodium related or something else. I weigh everyday and I can tell you it is up & down ALL OF THE TIME, perfectly normal. Here is a screenshot of my weights from a few months ago

As you can see, up & down happens, I had a 6 pound gain one day too, but it went down shortly after, then kept going down.
  • Honestly, that sounds like a water weight issue. Did you have a lot of high sodium foods over the weekend?

Sounds like water retention to me.
I would not worry, it will be gone soon.

I did eat pizza and popcorn over the weekend, both salty. I never really eat salty food so its possible my body was in shock from salt overload

    Here's your problem...
You got on the scale AFTER working out.
The best time to weigh yourself is in the morning, naked, post-toilet, pre-food.
Weigh yourself under the same conditions every week so you can compare more accurately.

Ditto amcook4. I weigh every day and can see fluctuations of 3 pounds or more at times. It's just my body doing its thing.

Agree. Also you would have to eat roughly an extra 3000 calories a day on top of maintenance to gain 6 lbs in one week so unless you at that much it probably isn't fat gain.

Other than this weigh in, have you been consistently losing? You say you're eating better but did not mention staying on track with a caloric deficit.

Most people say "the best time to weigh yourself is in the morning, naked, post-toilet, pre-food"... I sorta dispute that belief! I have a bit of an OCD going since my 90 pound weight loss and I weigh myself 2 times as day. First thing in the morning (as described above) and when I get home from work, before I consume dinner after I change out of my dress work clothes (yes I am naked and post-potty!). For the last month everyday I see a fluctuation of several pounds between morning and night. For example yesterday my morning weight was 104.8 (lbs) evening weight 101.2 (lbs). When I see it drop so low, I know to eat a little more at dinner. These are standard consistent readings FOR ME. Just remember, everyone is different (and I don't work out!).

All that said I agree with everyone here, fluctuation will happen. As long as there is a calorie deficit, you "should" see weight loss in the long run... unless there is an "underlying medical condition".

Best success in your journey. It sounds like you are are taking the right path. :)
