You want one with a chest strap, really the only way to track it properly. My personal favorite is the Polar FT4, theres an FT6 but a lot of extra features not what I need it for. Its pricey as most are but if you hit amazon on a sale day *ahem black Friday/cyber Monday* youll get a decent deal :)

I have the Sportline Elite Cardio 660 (Walmart, $58). I've owned it for a year and have been pleased with it.

I have a Zephyr, which is JUST a strap, which connects by bluetooth to several different apps on my phone. I take my phone with me anyway at the gym or walking/jogging/biking/hiking for the music and gps tracking, and I would much rather hear my heart rate at intervals through my earbuds than to have to constantly take my eyes off what I'm doing to look down at a watch.

I use a Polar F7, and love it. The only disadvantage is that the display is a little light and sometimes hard to see. Good prices on Amazon.com.

What do you intend to use it for and what sort of training do you do?

I like the mio alpha which is a wrist heart rate monitor and has the same accuracy as the chest strap but is far more comfortable. It still needs a receiver for the heart rate such as a smartphone or bluetooth2 device. It is compatible with my garmin running watch which is great.
  • I love my Polat P4
