Arc Trainer Calorie Counting

So I am aware that the arc trainer's calorie counting isn't completely accurate. I've seen a lot of people who take what the arc trainer says that they burn and divide it in half or reduce it by about 30%. I know that I am getting a heart rate monitor for Christmas, but I need a way to calculate it in the meantime to provide me with the most accuracy. Does anyone know which of these ways is best or have another suggestion?

My only suggestion in the meantime is to add it on the low end so you're not over eating it back into your diet. I think from what you've already read there is no real way to be accurate about it.0
