Starting to try to get pregnant!

My husband and I have decided to start trying to get pregnant for the first time! I've been calorie counting and trying to get down to a healthy weight for the past 7 months in order to start trying. Now that I'm at a "healthy" weight, should I up my calorie consumption to help try to conceive? And then what about while I'm pregnant - how many calories do I need to consume then? And should I then always eat back my workout calories? I'm currently eating about 1,400 calories a day, leaving a deficit of about 400-500 calories after exercise. I've heard that it's bad to lose weight while pregnant, so then I guess I should eat all my workout calories???

i just went through this. I delivered my baby girl in December. During pregnancy you only need a extra 300 calories in the 3rd trimester. Eating more calories won't help you get pregnant faster. Being healthy will! When you conceive your OBGYN will give you all the information you need on excercise. My doctor told me to maintain my weight I gained 1.5lbs during my pregnancy! Baby dust to you ... Babies are wonderful!0

Yep. There's no need to start eating more (only 300 calories) until the 2nd/3rd trimester, depending on your weight. If you're still overweight you may not need to eat more until the 3rd tri. Once you get pregnant just listen to your body. If you feel extra hungry you can eat a little more, it does take more energy to grow a baby, even when your baby is tiny.
I just got pregnant for the third, and last, time. I'm not even logging my food because I'm not hungry and trying to meet my calorie goal is too frustrating. With my previous pregnancies I lost weight for the first half of the pregnancies. I'm not really hoping for that to happen again, but I won't be upset if it does. (The hcg pregnancy hormone makes the body burn fat at an increased rate if the mother is eating less than normal, like during morning sickness.) I'm still about 40 pounds overweight so I will be keeping a closer eye on my diet and will be trying not to gain much weight. But, we'll see what happens, I'll listen to my body the whole way through and I'll eat when I need to.0 -
I agree....talk with your doctor! Everyone's bodies and medical history is different and you need the medical expert to guide you on this one! Good luck!!!! :-)0

Yes... I have carried 6 children... eating healthy and taking a pre-natal vitamin will help you have better chances of conception. But please get with your doc asap. They can tell you EVERYthing you need to know. Wishing the best for you and your husband and that new little baby (or babies!!)0

If you aren't pregnant yet and are looking for ways to improve your diet the book what to eat while you are pregnant is great. If you start eating that way now it can help make it easier when you do get pregnant. It is basically just a clean diet but I thought it was very helpful.

If you express concern with your doctor s/he will likely put you in touch with a nutritionist that will guide you. I was told by an OB that if you're already obese you don't need to gain any weight during pregnancy as long as you're getting good nutrition. He said that he has had a few very obese women who actually lost weight naturally during pregnancy and he said that was fine too because they weren't TRYING to lose weight though he says he doesn't encourage women to lose weight during pregnancy.0

You don't need extra calories now. BUT studies have shown correlative data that when you drink WHOLE milk instead of low fat it can help improve your fertility. It's from the nurses study. Good luck getting pregnant! And try really hard not to get angry when people tell you to "Just relax and have fun" LOL0

Being a 36 yo stay home mother, my weight stayed too. I was the weight I left the hospital up until I stumbled upon the MFP APP on my android phone. So far, I have lost a little over 15lbs and BOOM! I missed my period. Bottomline line is, for myself, I am NOT eating back my calories but what do is eat a lot healthier than what I my previous standards were and exercise consistently. So all I had to do is lose weight. But check with your Dr, since we are all different like snowflakes.
