Can you calculate distance with time?

If you read my signature you'll see my miles walked and I exclude my trail walks because I simply do not know how far I've walked. I would LOVE to enter them into it but the fact that I can't Google map them (trails or just off the beaten path) I don't count them. I know how many calories I've burned and how long I walked for...just not how far. Any ideas?

edit:

It took me 30 minutes to walk 1.2mi (a majority of that is uphill)

If I walk 45 minute trails that vary in grades...how many miles have I gone?

do you know your average walking speed when you are not on trails? How much harder are the trails? If you know your speed and distance and time on the regular walking paths, you can subtract say 1/2 mph from your regular walking speed (to account for rougher terrain) and calculate it that way. Of course, you work 'harder' on the trails so you *could* keep your speed the same and just assume that even though you are walking slower, you are burning more calories. That would throw your actual distance off by a little bit, depending on how far/long you walk.

I've calculated several trail walks this way, by knowing what my normal walking speed is and knowing my time on X distance.

I have a pedometer but...it's pretty lame/cheapy one and will count a step if you don't move lol. I don't trust it.

Your calories burned are going to be based on a certain amount per minute that you walk, which in turn should give you the basic pace that you were walking.

    Eg...If you burned 600 Calories walking for 60 Minutes...then by that token, you'd have burned approx 10 calories/minute (600 / 60).

You can use the exercise calculators to guestimate your distance based on your time and total calories.

Eg. 60 mins at 5 kph is approx 800 Calories. 60 mins at 4kph is 500 Calories.

So if you can estimate where your workout fits in...then you can estimate your speed.

Then, take your speed multiplied by your time...and you get your distance.

I don't know any of that information. I walk different speeds depending on the terrain...obviously if it's a grade I walk slower. Generally on flat surfaces I walk faster. I'm still building up my stamina...furtherest I've gone on one of my walks is 2.2mi and that took me 74 minutes with a lot of uphills and large grades.

Do you have an Android, iPhone or Blackberry phone? Or an iPod touch? You could download apps that will track your walking distance, speed, etc. I do that every time we go to the Disney World parks with my kids, which is just about every other week since I live in Orlando, FL, and that way I keep track on my Android phone. I use iMapMyRide. It free and it keeps all that info for me. In fact, you can also record a trail so you can go on it or pass it on to someone. It's pretty neat.

Good luck and hope that helps!

Or simply get a Heart Rate Monitor with chest strap.. I bought mine at WalMart for $48.71 it's a Sportline SX and you can track calories burned and many other things.

I think I'll have to either invest in a new pedometer or just deal with not calculating my trail walks unless I know the trails actual mileage.

edit: ASILVA3111 - That's a great idea but I did have a pedometer I downloaded once and it didn't calculate at all. I'll have to look one of those up. Does it calculate mileage or steps?

I have an HRM but it doesn't tell me how many miles I've gone. Just calories burned and how long I have been working out.
  • This is a good website

Click the "Walking Calculator" link, then you have 3 options. Time and distance, time and speed, speed and distance.

The speed/time one might be able to help you. If you don't know your average speed walk a route you do know the distance of and time yourself. speed = distance/time.

Iif you have an Iphone you can download the nike+ Gps app (I believe it costs $ 1.50). It will log the distance walked, calories burned and time. You can also preset it to a calorie goal, time or distance you want to walk. It syncs to the Nike+ site so you can keep track of your walks over time. The site is geared for runners but works just as well for walkers. All you need to do is to hold or wear the phone on your walk. I don't want to bother with the math so the app works for me!

The app I use, iMapMyRide, calculates MPH (speed), fully gps maps your trail, and distance, time that you are walking and time that you are idling. The HRM that I use calculates calories burned, of course, heart rate, HR Zone, alarm for when you are out of the zone you selected. So no, the HRM doesn't have the ability to record your miles, just your calories burned and time. Go to http://www.mapmyride.com/ and check out the app. It's neat as hell and you can even look at your trails online. FREE!

Thanks everyone! I'll stick with my HRM and I'll also try that app on my phone. Tomorrow I'm going on a hike so we'll see how that works out.

    Appreciate it!

The calories burn is just a guess-timate.. as the iPhone has no way of knowing how your heart rate is operating..

you may want to try mapmyrun.com it has an option where you can change the map to a hybrid so it shows like google earth but also shows the street names, etc. I used to map trails on our last base to track my miles.. It may work! Good luck!

I use the MapMyRide for my Android. http://www.mapmyride.com/ I tried bunch of the free ones before deciding with this one; including Cardio Trainer. Thought MapMyRide had more features. And who can beat FREE.
