Why 10,000 Steps?

I've seen this referenced as a goal for a lot of people with fitbits and other types of pedometers.
Is it suggested by these devices? Is it a trend? Is it a hashtag?
Why not 5,000?
Why not 15,000?
Why not 8,624?
I must know. My curiosity demands it.

Working from my somewhat unreliable memory, it is because people who walk at least 10000 steps in a day a less likely to be overweight according to statisticians. Thus 10000 as a minimum goal is seen as a way to combat obesity.0
