Whey Protein, Do we need it or not?

Hi there,
I was just curious if it is beneficial to take Whey Protein Powder while on a Diet??
What exactly is the benefit of using it and does it help promote weight loss? Just wanted some info
to see if I should buy any of it or not. If so what are some good brands or does it matter?

It helps me to mix it into water or milk to add calories to my day. Many days I am way too low on calories and it is important to eat! Whey Protein is a great choice for me because I do not eat many meats (just happens that way, I am not a vegetarian or anything like that) and it is hard for me to reach my protein goal each day.
Protein helps our muscles recover and other fabulous things happen with our bodies (I forgot them at this moment) when we ingest enough protein each day.
I'm not sure if it directly benefits weight loss, but eating enough calories for your body each day does! And that is the main reason I use it.0 -
Whey protein is easily absorbed by the body. It doesn't necessarily benefit weight loss, but does help build lean muscle and speed recovery times.0

Yep. It's basically a very convenient way to get more protein. If you're getting all the protein you need from whole foods, then you're good to go. If you find that it's hard to get enough protein over the course of a day, then it's a convenient way to get some. It's also easily absorbed by the body.0

if you're not doing resistance (weight) training then , no, you don't need it. If you are, then taking it within an hour with skim milk after exercise will help you a LOT.0

I heard from my dad that one of his friends went on a whey protein "diet", but ended up swelling up even bigger than he already was.
But he didn't exercise while drinking the stuff.0 -
I have a whey protein shake immediately after exercising. It's absorbed very quickly and helps the muscles recover and repair themselves. It doesn't help with weight loss per se but it does help add some calories if you have trouble eating all your exercise calories.0

Its worth taking if your lacking protein from your diet.
Its very worying that this site suggests I should only have 67g or protien a day!
At that rate I would be losing muscle mass too which is a no no!
Read any decent fitness site and you'll want to be taking about 1g of protein per 1lb of body mass. Thats the general rule.
Im around 200lb so I take close to 200g of protein.
Most people on here will be losing weight by physical exercise, so it will certainly help to feed the muscles and help tone up.
But excessive protein can cause you to gain weight.
Theres tons of protien powders out there, but be sure to go for the pure ones with minimal calories, some are loaded with sugar.

I use whey protein after my workouts to get back my exercise calories. I find I feel better too. Not so shakey. I know it helps with muscle recovery.0

Yes it's important for any type of workout. Protein helps with recovery like everyone has mentioned (Glutamine and Potassium is abundant in Whey Protein and is key for recovery). Whey Protein is a lean and quick source of calories to keep your muscles fueled and is one of the easiest forms for the body to absorb . Intake amount depends on the individual and their diet and workout routine.
It won't necessarily equate to weight loss. It will reduce the amount of muscle loss or increase the amount of muscle mass depending on your type of workout routine, diet plan, and intake amount.
The more muscle you have, the more calories you will burn. Protein will help slow, maintain, or build muscle mass (weight). But your fat loss should be greater depending on your calorie deficit, workout routine, and muscle mass.0 -
I use soy protein, but this whole business about needing 1 gram for every lb you weigh is absurd! At most, if you are trying to lose weight, you need half that amount, and thats pushing it.

46 grams for the average woman and 56 for the average man.
Also, if you are looking for a low calorie protein, soy is your best bet. I get mine at GNC, or any local nutrition store.0 -
Well I manage to get all my required Protein according to MFP at least on most days so I was just curious
if I needed to take the powder and how it would benefit me. I have a hard enough time losing weight without taking
something that will cause me to not lose or make it even slower. Im stuck at the moment and haven't lost a
single pound in over 8 days but Im still sticking with it no matter what.0 -

Speaking of soy...
There are so many things that went wrong with soy thanks to our food industry.
First of all, soy has one of the highest concentrations of pesticides of any farmed product, and these pesticides alone are estrogenic compounds. Not only that, but soy is also one of the most concentrated sources of phyto-estrogens.
Over-consumption of soy can lead to hormonal imbalances in both men and women due to these high levels of phyto-estrogens.
Soy products also contain many different anti-nutrients that can be detrimental in your body.
