Ellipitcal ... easier on the knees

And I can really work one of the larger muscle group in the body (gluts, hamstring) by being in a varying degrees of squat positions to get the most bang for my buck so-to-speak

Depends, I do both. I like to shake it up, I get bored if I do the same thing all of the time. If I had to choose, probably the treadmill, just because I'm trying to eventually become a runner, but the elliptical is good for cross training and warm ups on strength training days. But my favorite indoor cardio equipment would be a stationary bike.

No real preference here. I do the elliptical if I want more arm movement involved.

I see the problem with the elliptical is that the motion is not transferable into real life. So other than a slight increase in endurance it will not help you do anything much better than you could anyway. If you goal is to just burn cals, doesn't really matter.

Also keep in mind most ellipticals you cannot adjust the stride pattern and may force you to move in way that is not natural and can lead to injury.

Treadmill. I always fall off the elliptical when I try to run on it...

The elliptical gives me more bang for my cardio buck because I'm able to push harder for longer than I am on the treadmill. However, I've used the elliptical at the highest elevation setting and at resistance 14 for a while and experienced lower back pain due to pinched cauda equina nerves from overstimulated gluteal muscles. That people is why stretching is so important. Had to switch to the treadmill for a week or two to give the glutes time to recover and relax.

The elliptical seems to burn more calories per unit of time.
