Worst scare raising kids

My wife and I were walking along some 25 or 50 ft. from son on his tricycle...about 4 years old, wearing his wintry clothing. When he got near a steep incline we hollored at him to stop. He did...got off his trike, climbed on the step behind the seat, and pushed off on the incline. I took off at my highest speed, and reached him just as the 45/50 degree incline dead ended into a concrete wall, and caught him as he bounced off the wall. He had on a thick winter cap which was probably the only thing that kept him from being killed. He did have a concussion and we kept him awake every two hours during the night. He made it. Has an IQ of about 147....we've told him his "wall" bounced some sense into him.
What's your worst scare raising kids?

  • I have a 4 year old son too. I swear it's their mission in life to give their parents a freakin' heart attack. Glad your little guy is okay.

Thankfully I haven't had many major scares, but the one I did have was similar to yours. We were out on a paved path, him on his Strider bike, me walking when he decided to go down a pretty big hill. He got going too fast and I couldn't keep up. He wobbled a few times, managed to not fall, then finally stopped himself at the bottom. When I finally got to him, he was freaking out. Poor guy had scared the crap out of himself. If he had fallen, it would have been bad. Thankfully I'm a stickler for putting a helmet on him - bike, scooter, skateboard, whatever. Gotta protect those little noggins!

My daughter, at 19, was with her dad at Phuket Island in Thailand when the 2004 tsunami hit. They had just stepped onto the beach when the waves started coming in.

    I agree. A helmet is a must.

My daughter, who was 6 at the time, wandered off while we were at an amusement park's water park. I was frantic for about a half hour, got a lifeguard to help me search, acting like a mad woman screaming her name at the top of my lungs until she leisurely comes walking back, saying she had just gone over to our beach towels to get her goggles. I was relieved and angry at the same time!

My husband was in the middle of bolting our son's 6 foot tall bookshelf to the wall to prevent it falling or being pulled over accidentally. Our floors are uneven so it was wobbly. He turned to his toolbox to get something and one of our 4 year old boys (again with the 4s) went to inspect what he was doing. At that moment the bookshelf toppled over on top of him. Even at 5 months pregnant, I ran over and lifted it off him - and up he popped. He was small enough to fit in between the empty bottom and middle shelf. He was fine, but I lost about 5 years off my life.

my sons were jumping from bed to bed in their second-floor bedroom around ages 3 & 5 - my oldest lost his balance and fell out the (open) window, through the screen. He was, miraculously, uninjured.

My 3 year old daughter is my scary one! She's a little daredevil. We live by the sea, and in the Summer her big brother was throwing stuff in the sea (neither can swim yet) and she just jumped in to get something. Only in the shallow bit, but enough to give me a heart attack! This time last year she tripped on some concrete steps and went head over heels, literally did a headstand on the way down. 2 mins later she was up and trying to climb the steps again.
My 5 year old son fell down the stairs from our flat and broke his elbow in Sept. I didn't see it happen. But my husband said he literally just fell flat on his face and banged his elbow on the way. He had brand new trainers on.
