So many calories in nuts, how to incorporate?

Hi guys,

I love nuts but had forgotten about them so I just bought unsalted walnuts, almonds and peanuts. I took a bag to work with me, with a total of 50 grams (30 gram walnuts, 15 gram almonds and 20 gram peanuts). Now, I think that was a bit too much, counting up to a whopping 425 calories. Didn't calculated it when I made the bag.

So yes, I can cut it down a bit, but still... it didn't really fill me up. Or, it fills me up but I feel like it isn't filling me up enough for that many calories. It also gave me 13 grams of protein, which is nice, but still...

Any tips? Should I cut the walnuts (heaviest in calories)? How do you add nuts to your diet, should I simply eat less?

Nuts are full of fat so of course, they will be high in calories. Cutting them would be individualistic and depends on your calorie, macro, micro breakdown in my opinion.

Yeah, nuts are tough to manage. I stopped eating them by themselves and instead mix them in other foods. I put seeds on salads and walnuts in whole gram cereals but only 3x's weekly as their calorie density would otherwise mess-up my game plan.
    Good luck.

I just eat nuts in small amounts...add almonds to my salad or walnuts to my oatmeal. Except for pistachios...then I just eat the whole bag. :)

They may be high in calories but almonds are a great low sodium, high potassium source of protein. The way i see it I can always run an extra couple of miles if I go over on my calories, as someone wanting to sat around 1,500mg of sodium a day they're part of my daily diet.

Chopping up a few adds great flavor to a salad or steamed vegetables or oatmeal. I love nuts but realize nuts alone may not be enough.

I add them to dinner salads on non-workout days when I'm not all that hungry. Keeps me in the 1400 calories range. They're also great in a stir fry!

I measure out a serving (28g), and usually pair them with fruit. When I add them to other foods (salads, oatmeal, green beans), I measure out .25 to .5 of a serving, depending on the actual dish.

10-15 grams per day, with some fruit and and a piece of cheese.

I measure out an ounce of almonds and eat one or two nuts at a time when the mood strikes during the day. No, it won't satisfy you if your stomach is growling, but a consistent habit of a nibble here and there coupled with nibbles on stuff like raw veggies, and you won't get growly, hopefully. I like to portion out an ounce ahead of time so I don't accidentally eat TONS of nuts. Nuts and cheese are my two "better measure" items...
