Ok I have gained since starting this & I have been following this calorie counting thing 100%. of course I JUST found out it is ok to leave the calories from excersize alone & be under as long as I take in at least 1200 calories a day. I don't think its boredom making me hungry. I stay reletively busy betweeen work & keeping the haus (I'm kinda OCD(self proclaimed) about keeping the haus as I simply don't think my BF should have to live in a dirty haus keeping the hours he does). I try snacking on the lowest calorie snacks I can find( ie, celery, mango, yogurt bar(jamba makes 1 thats only 90 calories each vanilla blueberry pomegranite), but I am still feeling hungry. Yet I still want want to leave some of my earned excersize calories behind.

WRONG about the exercising calories. I am a fitness professional and who ever told you that is WRONG. YOU NEED TO REPLACE YOUR CALORIES BURNED DURING EXERCISE. YOu are hungry because you aren't replacing you calories burned inexercise. If you are gaining weight it is because your body is in starvation mode and storing fat, not shedding fat.

You will plautue faster, longer and harder. YOu worked hard to lose weight, be smart about it.

Once you start replacing your exercise calories, you will see a loss. I have a blog to answer all your questions: http://torquefitness.blogspot.com/. Some of my posts are about this very thing.

If you're hungry, you're either not eating enough calories for your activity level or you're not eating the right kind of calories. Protein and whole grains keep you feeling fuller longer than say, a piece of celery. Really, you should try to eat SOME of your exercise calories especially if you earn a ton of them.

I would say for you to eat your exercise calories! You have earned them so eat them! Then hopefully you will not feel hungry anymore!

You could try totaling your TOTAL calorie burn for the day using your goals page and your exercise calories combined, then subtract 1000 (estimated 2 pounds per week weight loss) If it is OVER 1200 calories eat within that window ... if not, then stick with the 1200.
Example: My goals page says my calories burned from daily activity at sedentary level is 1840
I worked out and burned 800 calories (400 swimming and 400 biking - REALLY GOOD WORKOUT!...LOL)
Add 1840 and 800 and the total is 2640
subtract 1000 calories and your eat window is between 1200 and 1640 calories ... if you are STILL hungry you could even eat as much as 1890 calories and STILL be in a 750 calorie deficit (1.5 pounds per week)
But the most important thing is to make sure you are hydrated... Before you decide you are hungry, make sure you are not thirsty a cool glass of water may do the trick and stave off what feels like hunger.

I would aim for the higher protein, lower calorie snacks to keep you feeling fuller longer. The yogurt bar is a great idea...opt for a greek yogurt since it is higher in protein, nuts, cottage cheese and things to that effect. You look like you are doing fabulous! If you are hungry..go ahead and eat more calories..it won't hurt you as long as you are not going over your net goal.

I understand were you are coming form, but this is not good advise. There is a reason MFP has you replace your calories. If your body isn't recieving the calories it needs it will stop losing weight. MFP alreay has a 500 caloire deficit inthere for you.

If you are workingout you need to replace the calories burned, or don't workout.
  • Actually I HAVE been eating my earned calories & gaining weight all along. I never had to worry about counting calories or what to eat then I got up to 198 I managed to get back to 144 then i have teetered back & forth since. I stay active(minus my facebook & now MFP addiction). I have been looking at calories & even paying attention to cal from fat. i simply feel hungry no matter what I am eating

What sort of food are you eating?

if you open your food diary, people might be able to offer a more informed opinion.

From your orginal post it seemed that you were just eating the 1200. Open your food diat=ry because it probably is you are eating fast burning foods such as cereals, breads, exct...
  • DON'T WORK OUT? every thing is a work out. also I know on myfat secret it has you logging your sleep but here it does not. I am a really strange sleeper esp when my BF is at work ill sleep an hour or 2 then up to wander the haus, or snack(which I try not to do) watch some idiot box ,for 30 mins to an hour then back to it. does sleep fit into this equation as well?
    :noway:
  • how do I do that?
(open my food diary) im a face booker thats about all I know how to do on this thing

Never mind I think I figured it out.

Have you tried bumping UP your calories for a few days? Try and fit in more protein....most of the low calorie snacks you put up there eventually turns to sugar...sugar makes you hungry. Add nuts, string cheese, low-sugar greek yogurt, cottage cheese. Don't be afraid of good fats, yes they have higher calories, but they keep you fuller longer.

In your sleep you burn caloires, exsisting you burn calories, but its not considered a workout. YOur body needs atleast 1200 calories a day to maintain function. MFP uses the basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the minimal amount of nutrients that the body needs to maintain the basic essential life functions. the calories required by the BMR are what the body needs at a state of complete rest. meaning that if you were to lay in bed all day your body would need the bare minimum amount of calories that the BMR requires in order for your body just to function normally.

There are tons of BMR calculators on the Internet but a quick and dirty way to estimate the BMR is to:

body weight in lbs gets converted to kilos so take the example bw of 150 lbs and divide that by 2.2 (2.2 kilos per pound)

    (150 / 2.2) x 24 (hours a day) = 1636

so a 150 lbs person with average body fat would burn 68 calories per hour or 1636 calories over 24 hours in a state of complete rest.

Exercise is where your heart rate is up for a period of time. YOu should get a HRM and wear it during you exercise and replace those caloires.

I agree with this. On May 6th it said you burned 1,364 calories. I barley burn that many running a half marathon. Do you have a Heart Rate Monitor? If you are using MFP to calculate the calories burned, I've found it overestimates (sometimes by far). If you are eating back those calories, you may be actually consuming OVER the recommended values and gaining weight.

    Yes I agree.

I just had a peek at your exercise diary and it seems like you are over logging.

On quite a few of the days you have logged 'walking brisk pace' - is this something you do 'day to day' or specifically to exercise?

When you first join MFP, it asks you your current activity level. If you have a rather active lifestyle MFP accounts for this and therefore ups your calorie intake. You therefore dont have to log this.

I only log exercise when I go to the gym or work out. Sure I walk to the shops or around the office quite a lot throughout the day, but I dont consider this as exercise, as this is only 'light' activity.
My rule is to only log exercise when Ive been out of breath, or when my heart beat increases.

As suggested before, many users on here swear by using heart rate monitors to get a more accurate reading of your burned calories. Maybe one of these would work for you.

I looked at your diary, it looks like your eating back a lot of your calories, but maybe using foods that are dense and higher in fiber? I love using Kashi products for snacks and breakfast. I also think raw almonds are a great snack that sticks with you for a while.

Just wanted to ask, what kind of workouts do you do to burn that many calories? Are you using a heart rate moniter to gauge calories burned? Looking for other workout ideas..:flowerforyou:
