Calorie Target

Hi !!!

Just a little confused about what my calorie target should be... I am just recently started Turbo Fire and according to the book's math I should be consuming around 1700 calories, but according MFP it is 1200. Which one should I follow ... why so much of a difference between one an another???

I overwrite the setting on MFP to 1700, but not sure if I did the right thing. Although, I have to say, since I started I have been under 1700, but not under 1200 for food. Or should I be paying attention to the Net # ???

Please some clarification! I want to loose a few pounds and get bikini ready before I go back home (currently working out of state).

Regards,

J.

This is what I do! I figured my calories using the TF recommendations but did not add in the exercise calories ( i think it say we can burn an average of 600 calories per class)

    154x10=1540(10%)=154
    154+1540=1694
    1694-500(deficit)= 1194

Ok so I got 1194 without adding in the exercise calories! I then set my mfp settings to give me a net of 1200 and when I workout it will add in my workout calories and just try to eat under that total amount!
    Does that make sense?

  • Ok ... My math according TF came out to 1624, recommendation was the Low-Carb at the 1700 calorie level, but I have not suscribe to the full membership on Team Beach Body so I can get the meals plan.

I overwrite the setting on MFP to 1700 (goal), so before excercise ... can I overwrite the net? Should I be at 1700 even after the work out?

It is a little confusing ... I didn't have to worry about this before ... I guess my metabolism is changing after my 30 bday. Sucks! LOL!

Yes insteed of putting in 1700 put in your desired Net! I don't have the full membership at BB either and I havn't gone recently to see what calorie range there calculators would put me! I have a question, if you set your settings at 1700 are you eating your exercise calories after that?
  • No... my highest net has been 1200 since I started counting.

I am doing the same thing as Cinico (I am also doing turbo fire) but I did not change the calorie count on here from the 1200 and I input my calories burned and it tells me my extra calories and this is pretty much on point with what the book calculations come out to for me. So I figure this way I don't have to keep calculating my calories because mfp is doing the dirty work for me :)

I was only eating 1300 calories a day, TF said I should eat around 2000. I lost about 5 pounds the first week and then haven't lost more. I'm bumping my back up to about 1800 because i'm afraid I'm in starvation mode right now. I'm coming up on week 4 of TF so in a little over a week I will take my measurements and weigh in again.
it's a little confusing, and takes a bit of tweeking to figure out what works for you as an individual! Good luck! I love Turbo!!!
  • Well ... For example, yesterday my net was 923 after my work out of course... But I am eating well... I mean, I am not staying hungry.

I guess my question is ... should I be at 1700 even after my work out?

I kinda have the same question as you!!! MFP gave me a total of 1200 calories a day with out exercise when I do exercise it adds on calories which I try not to use so I can lose weight. I figured out that MFP was taking off about 740 calories to give me the 1200 so I could see a weight loss!! My question is this I've heard some trainers say you should stay with in a 500 calorie deficet to lose weight and others say 1000 calorie deficet, who is right on this one???? I don't want to put myself into starvation mode either!!!
And by the way I love Turbo Fire I just got done with the inferno plan and lost 4 lbs in 6 days!!!!!

You should always get in at least 1200 a day net or then you will be putting your body into starvation mode!!!!

I would stick with a 500 calorie deficit. maybe a little higher, I had mine at 800 which is roughly losing a pound a half a week. in theory, that's what it should be! LOL everyone is different though, some do fine with a 1000 calorie diet, or if you're like me you need to eat to lose weight!

listen to your body. are you tired? grumpy? still able to push hard during workouts? if not, then just hydrate and ride it out. either you plateau, or you keep losing!

Good question, I had been wondering the same.
  • Tomorrow is my 7th day, so I'll be figuring out if I lost anything during the first week. I should have, as I completely cut on the sodas.

Makes sense staying at 1700 (according my TF math) even after my work out, I just pulled the book and it already includes the 650 average calories burned from the work out.

I guess I better start eating some more healthy food, and maybe I don't have to limit my portions to much.

Question .... the higher the calorie deficit, the more you lose???

@Wyoruby - how did you feel during that week? I was checking out the plan and it looks fine... I think I can do it... Although, I don't have the Shakeology. Did you use them or you make a substitution?

I think its important to eat enough to keep you going with enough energy so that you can do your workout and do your daily life without bonking! I have found that I myself went into starvation mode, doing more harm than good! So now I do eat and try to make sure I am close to 1200 net calories! Some days I do better others not so great!

Another thing I would like to point out is that MFP exercise calories seem to be on the high side! When you are able to get yourself a HR watch so you can have a more accurate form to see how much you burned.

Also regarding Shakeology, I think its a great meal replacement; however, I do feel we can be succesfull without it! I do use it right now! Its a good and healthy way to up your calories!

also remember to add in the 200 calorie catchall, chalene talks about in her book! For example my goal calories today is close to 1600, so I will try to stay closer to the 1400 for today! I go back in forth but that might help you out!

Let me know how your fist week went!
    Cindy
  • What HRM watch do you have? Planning on getting one ... But the thing is that with HIIT you continue burning after your work out, how do you measure that?

yeah, i stay close to 1800 now. i didn't even think about the 200 calorie catchall! i had forgotten about that until yesterday actually. I've been so tired and stuff that I actually took a 2 hour nap yesterday and knew something wasn't right!
    Good luck!

I am using the Polar FT7, it does have a chest strap though! So far its been good! I did find out it measured lower than what the Sportlines brand from walmart did! Also, look into a watch that is contiuosly reading without you having to measure your HR on your own! Some watches you have to put your fingers on or push a button to get a reading! I bought mine on Amazon!

I guess for the HIIT the only way is to wear your HR watch all day! Which I havn't done! However one day I wore my watch for an hour afterwards(meanwhile I was doing some yard work) and I found that I burned over 200 calories in that one hour! hmm.. not bad!

I hope the nap helped! Which reminds me of the importance of sleeping well!! :)
  • 200 doing yard work ... not bad at all !!! :)

Which one is the one that you bought in Amazon? Not big on wearing a strap (because I know I would not do it).

So ... if my goal is 1700 I should do 1500 net (so I take in consideration the 200 catchall. Makes sense...

Thanks, I'm going to try to stick to the 100 calorie deficit but I'm not going to kill myself if I go over and have smaller deficit!!

I felt great during that week but I have been doing the Turbo Fire work outs for a couple months and not seeing any results because of my eating!!! So I started MFP and the inferno plan to jump start my weight lose. If your just starting turbo fire I woudl wait till the end of your first month and then try it.

I have a HRM that I use to track my calories, but I do have to stop and take it though, I'm wanting to get a bodybugg for my birthday I think that would help out a ton!!! You wear it all day long and it is 90% acurate as to how many calories your body burns throughout the day!!!
  • yeah ... I read about the boddybug but not crazy about the registration thing.

same here, I'm thinking of getting the FitBit. its kind of the same thing but it's only $100 and no registration. it tracks your sleep patterns and everything! I think it's way cooler than the BB!
  • Hum ... I have not heard of that one. Going to check it out. But I am definitively getting one soon ... I need accurate numbers.
