Do whatever exercise interests you, since exercise is for health. Eat at a caloric deficit to lose weight.

    ^^^Agreed

The best exercise to do starting off is whatever exercise you'll stick with.

If you have absolutely no idea what to do, I would suggest starting off by walking a few times a week. If you are completely and totally out of shape, even just walking 15 minutes three times a week is going to help. Then kick it up to 20 minutes or four times a week and just add from there.

If you have access to a gym, ask the staff about getting an orientation that shows you how to use the weights. There are a ton of beginner's lifting programs (Stronglifts 5x5 is constantly recommended here but there's also Starting Strength, AllPro's simple beginner plan, Greyskull LP, and on and on.) If necessary, you could ask at the gym about getting a personal trainer (likely will be an extra fee) to show you proper form or, if you are comfortable, check out a ton of YouTube videos for the program's prescribed lifts.

Finally, if you don't want to lift weights, consider bodyweight training. This is what I think of as old school gym class--pushups, lunges, pullups, etc. There are a ton of those programs as well (Nerd Fitness beginner's bodyweight routine is very simple for a beginner, Start Bodyweight basic routine, Convict Conditioning, You Are Your Own Gym, etc.)

This. You can get up and start walking. If that bores you try some youtube videos. If that bores you, try kickboxing. If that bores you try zumba. Whatever floats your boat and keeps you moving. Focus on eating in a caloric deficit and you will lose weight with or without exercising.

Jump up and down for a few minutes. Stand more than you sit. Walk around the block. Carry your groceries in a basket at the grocery store. It all adds up.

I'm making a goal of 10,000 steps a day. I just started and having a goal has helped me a lot. I'm making deals with myself like, you can sit down after you log 1000 steps. It's been great, and rather than have less energy, I actually have MORE! It feels good to get moving!

ha my coworkers and I all wore pedometers yesterday and ended up walking 15k steps each just at work. I was kind of surprised.

ha its kind of coincidental, I actually did a bit of research on the "10,000 steps a day" thing last night. it was originally a marketing ploy for a Japanese brand of pedometers. they say something like "walk 10,000 steps a day for better health". the center for disease control, American heart and cancer associations, etc. all recommend walking about 8,000 steps a day. which is about 4 miles. basically, more is better, though, especially with low impact cardio like wlaking, but the goal of the program is really to get everyone walking a little more then they are used to. if you normally walk 7,000 steps, shoot for 8, and so on and so on. kind of interesting.

I finally found someone else that does steps too! My pedometer has me at 12000 day for my goal.

It really does help with the fitness aspects for a healthier life..

But to answer OP's question.. if you plan to make exercise part of your strategy you have to find something that you like to do. But do take it like this .. nutrition is 85% and exercise is 15%. The exercise is a bonus for weight loss but moreover for a healthier you!

If you hate it for any reason, you will not keep doing it. Find something you like to do and you will keep doing it.

Get a step counter and get an idea how active you are now. Then you can pick any activity you enjoy and step it up a little.
