Hi all!

I am new to MFP, have been one for only about a week now. I'm 23, a grad student, and in the military! So fitness is important, not only to my health and body image, but to my job too!

HW: 164
CW: 162.4
H: 5'3
Size: 8 pants, Medium on top

I have a question for those of you who may know more about this weight loss stuff. I find myself a little confused with my weight and clothing size. I weight A LOT for my size. I've always had muscular legs, but that cant be the total reason. Its just, I see women on here who weigh about the same as I do, and are about the same height, yet they wear a size 14.

I'm just concerned about trying to set a goal weight. I would love to weigh 130lbs. But I wonder if that is not realistic. Don't get me wrong, I definitely have a lot of fat to lose. But I guess if I'm just more "dense" or muscular than some others, thats fine, but how do I then set a realistic goal weight?

I think the best way to describe my eating is in a "I deserve this" manner. My job is demanding. I work long hours, and sometimes am so tired or stressed that I think to myself "I can eat this pizza, or have that coke, because I deserve it". Well its time to change that mindset. Ya know what I deserve. I deserve a hot body, and a good score on my military physical fitness test, and some size 4 jeans.

.

I would get a read on your body fat percentage. That can help you know how much you want to lose and explain the weight vs. size dliemma. If you have a lot of lean mass then a higher number doens't matter as much.

    Hey there and welcome.

The thing to keep in mind is that muscle mass is more dense than fat, and so your weight is going to be higher than someone of the same height who weighs the same but doesn't have the same amount of muscle. If you just look at BMI, most professional bodybuilders would be classed as obese.

My suggestion would be to initially just set a 10lb weight loss and work towards that - you can always adjust it at a later stage or when you hit that goal. If you're more interested in building muscle / toning, your scale weight should be fairly low on the list of your success factors - percentage body fat and clothes sizes would be better things to focus on.

I've always been a larger frame than most girls my height too. Naturally more muscular with broader shoulders too. Even when I weigh 125-130 I have to wear large shirts if I want to be able to raise my arms without ripping it down the back like the Hulk. haha. I'd recommend going for a % body fat or talking to your doctor next time you go in for anything. They can give you a healthy number to shoot for.
