Surviving Holidays

My birthday and the wintertime holidays usually fall within the same two-week period. In this case, I'm celebrating my birthday on the 19th, and the next day, my family and I are going out for Hanukkah. Don't have to worry about Christmas, but I know I'm going to feel like overeating on both of those days. Do you have any suggestions for how I can enjoy those holidays without completely blowing my diet?

Willpower! Fix yourself a small plate and only have sample sizes of dessert. If you go too crazy, you'll regret it. My birthday was on the 13th and I told my husband no cake, and for the upcoming Christmas dinner, I am only having a small plate with sample sizes of pie. These days should not be used as excuses to pig out. Wait until you reach your goal to indulge a little more.

Weigh up the enjoyment of eating lots of holiday food with the consequences of having your goal set back a little. I plan to eat whatever I damn want on the 25th, since there are a lot of chefs in my family and the food is always incredible. I'm happy to accept the consequences; I know I will be right back on track the next day as I don't plan on taking home any leftovers :)

If it's going to make you miserable trying to log on your birthday and Hanukkah, don't do it. If you think it will be hard for you to get back to logging after allowing yourself a day off or too, or you think you will feel guilty or regretful afterwards, then practice moderation and try to earn some extra calories the week before with exercise.

Look at the bigger picture...you're talking about 2 days out of 365 in a year....

I cut myself some slack on holidays and special occasions...I don't gorge myself, but I do enjoy myself and I don't really worry about it. Nobody got fat because of their birthday or a handful of occasions during the year. People get fat when they treat everyday like an occasion.
