Period binge weight gain

So I completely understand when people say "just move on. It happened once. Bla bla bla". But I've been maintaining weight, & I don't really want to have to have one week of maintenance, a week of overeating, and then a week of weight loss calories...EVERY. MONTH.

I get it. One pound of weight gain is not a lot. BUT if us women were to continue doing this every month without compensating, that's 12 lb of gain in a year.

I'm tired of having to restrict. I'm happy just eating maintenance calories & upset that this pms slip up of 3,000 calories happened.

Should I just go about the normal -500 cals every day for a week?

Welcome!

You seem to have a LOT of anxiety about weight gain... are you recovering from an ED?

Here's your other thread about your period and food.

    Lots of good comments there.

I get that, but I'm just frustrated because I just started maintainance and I don't want it to be screwed up over this

I've found that maintenance really is about gaining and losing the same 5 lbs over and over again for the rest of your life! Most people aren't going to eat the exact same number of calories everyday. You go over, you go under. Its annoying.

That's exactly what my always-fit friends do. They stay on top of the scale and when it starts edging up again, reduce intake until it starts going down. They have a range they work within, it's just like aqualeo says, the same 5 pounds over and over again.

I eat to my hunger, which increases leading up to a period and then drops off sharply at some point during/after. I go a couple days barely eating. So, it balances out...except when I have a bunch of periods in a row, but that's another ball of wax.

Yup. This has been my experience also.

Try to eat normally during your period. I know it's hard, but it's doable. And then you might actually see a small decrease in weight after your period b/c your body actually has to work harder during this time so it's going to burn a few more calories.

I eat around 2600-3000 calories every saturday and it doesn't effect my weight loss at all..Is it just one day or are you eating that many cals for a whole week?

I ate 3,400 EXTRA calories over maintenance. I had eaten my 1700 cals (maintenance) and then jumped in bed and had a craving for chocolate. I grabbed a bag of my moms chocolate from downstairs and then when I calculated how much I had eaten, it was 3,400 extra :(

I'm also lactose intolerant...so I wonder if not all the calories will be absorbed.

I do 4500-5000 on saturdays, and as long as it's just one day, I still lose for the overall week. it takes a couple days for the water weight to drop back off, but... it always does.

Do you have a low iron count? I think when you are craving chocolate it can mean you are running low on certain vitamins, especially iron. Also when you are on your period you lose quite a lot of iron. I would seriously consider taking an iron supplement. There also comes a point when you must tell your craving "no". You can totally get it under control. Just keep trying to find what works for you because your period isn't going away anytime soon.

I wouldnt freak out if I was still eating a weight loss amount of calories the test of the month, but ive been eating maintenance because it's difficult for me to restrict now and I'm happy with the weight Ive been maintaining at. But if I were to eat an additional 3500 calories every month, that's 12 pounds a YEAR

I'm anemic. And I have low ferritin so my body doesn't absorb iron ::

    Iron and magnesium.

When i make sure to take a prenatal vitamin and one or two 250mg magnesium supplements a day, i don't have cravings for anything- even on my period, despite my love of sweets, potatoes, and chocolate.

You can take a prenatal when you're not pregnant?

Yes. They're one of the best multivitamins to take in general. Most doctors will recommend them.

Oh gosh, yes. They can be sort of expensive, but I know many women who continued to take them after their kids were born.

I just eat at a deficit when I can, so it makes up for my overeating on really bad days. I ate 4000 calories three days ago because I was SO hungry, but I was still within my maintenance calories for the week, and I've 'saved' another 1100 calories since because I just wasn't that hungry. I guess it's about finding your balance.
