cheers everyone. I picked up myfitneespal as an app in September 2010, and while I've always considered myself a reasonably active person, I've never paid much attention to the amount of food I eat. I've been a vegan for over 20 years and kind of assumed that the fact that I do eat healthy would pretty much cover it all, not taking into consideration portion sizes, nights out for drinks with friends, etc etc, basically all the pitfalls that everyone here is familiar with. Fitnesspal has been an amazing tracking tool, it's let me sort out my goals, figure out my exercise schedule and allowed me to really see when I was having "too much of a good thing" when it came to meals or social occasions. Weight loss has been slow, but steady. I started using the app at 245lbs, and today my weight stands at 229.1lbs. I'm aiming to get to the low 200's, but I'm so happy with the changes that have happened.
Along with food awareness, I've been able to focus my exercise goals and began to take my enjoyment of running up a level or two. I've done a couple of 5k running workshops in the past few years, but this winter I've been out 2-3 times a week early in the morning running with a friend. We tend to average 8-10k each run, so it's been between 16-30k each week all winter. I've been doing some strength training to compliement the runs, and over all must say that at 40 years old, I've never felt fitter.
This Saturday I ran my first 10k race, with a time of 59.10.6., which put me in 57th place out of a hundred or so participants. No records broken, but I'm extremely happy with my result. I feel like myfitnesspal has played a huge part of why I've been able to reach this point, and just wanted to say thanks guys!

Awesome!!!!!! You finished with a very respectable time. Way to go!! I want to run a 10K SO bad! In fact, I spent a good amount of time today looking for one in the next couple weeks. I regularly run 6 miles, but I really want to see how I rate in a race.0

Hello there Balsa
Your story and mine are quite similar. I am few years older (49), a few pounds heavier (around 240 still hoping to get to 200 again), run 5 k most days and did a 10 k just the other day, about the same speed as you. So I know just what it feels like to have that accomplishment. Good for you. Also finding mfp quite a useful tool. So keep running brother:)0 -
great job!! a 10k is in the works for me!0

Cheers guys! Thanks for all the great words of encouragement. On a more daunting note, in two weeks time I'll be running my first Half Marathon (21Km/13.1 miles) ...not sure what I was thinking when I signed up for that! Anyway, I think it will be an interesting experience. I don't have any kind of time goal in mind, but more or less just want to see what it will be like to do. Wish me luck!0

Awesome job on your 10K!!! Can't believe you are running a 1/2 in a few weeks, wow!! My goal is to run 1/2 but I think I will need way more time. You will do just fine, sounds like you have been doing a good job training for it already. Let us know how you do!!
Thanks for sharing!0 -
Great Job!! I ran my first 10K on March 20. I am a little older than you at 49 but I loved it. I am now training for a 1/2 marathon in August. I guess it is a natural progression from the 10K . Good Luck on the race!!0
