Without knowing how much protein you consume, I couldn't answer whether it is necessary. Although protein is needed in your diet. If you decide to add protein, pasteurized egg whites that you can purchase in any grocery store is a good choice. Egg whites contain all 22 amino acids and no other natural protein source can make that claim. They are tasteless and orderless, high in protein, no fat or cholesterol.
I do drink smoothies with multiple colored vegetables, avocado, zero calorie flavored vitamin water and egg whites and/or whey protein powder. I drink them only as a snack to keep my protein where I want it and to keep my vegetable consumption up.

I make big batches of smoothies using Greek yogurt, bananas, mixed berries, and milk. Then I freeze them in ~400 cal servings and partially thaw for breakfast or dessert so it's like having a protein/fiber-packed version of frozen yogurt. My Ninja is dishwasher-safe so it's easy to clean, particularly since I only make smoothies but once a week.

Hello thanks for reading.....I bought a blender about a week ago and ive started drinking smoothies for breakfast :) .... a banana, mix of berries with some vanilla almond milk with acouple hand fulls of spinach/greens. I was wanting to know if anyone is also doing this and how there progress is?? Also ive been wondering about protein powder? would it be a good idea to add? or something that really isent necessary... also if anyone has some ideas they'd like to share that'd be awesome :)

If you want to get more protein into your day, consider switching from almond milk to cow's milk or soy milk.

Recently I was given a nutribullet and I've been making smoothies for breakfast ever since. I think they are great but when it comes to weight loss it all boils doing to calories. I try to make mine 200 calories or less and eat egg whites as well to get some protein in. I didn't think it was possible to feel such a difference but I really do! It keeps me full longer than when I was just eating egg whites and oatmeal for breakfast. I feel mentally clearer and have noticed my mood has improved. The only downside is my grocery bill has gone up substantially.

If you aren't eating a form of protein for breakfast like eggs/egg whites, then I would suggest adding some protein powder.

I have a smoothie everyday for/with my breakfast. I started drinking them to get more fiber, protein, veggies and greens in my diet, not really for weight loss. I've experienced a lot of other benefits too...stronger vision, clearer skin, lowered blood pressure, more energy, better mood etc.

I use a Nutribullet which is just a cup and a blade and I drink out of it so clean up is fast and easy.

When I make large smoothies they are loaded and very filling. It usually takes me about an hour to finish and it keeps me full for hours. The smaller smoothies I would have with another item like steel cut oatmeal or I would make an all fruit one for something sweet - not for breakfast though.

Weight loss happens at a calorie deficit. If someone drinks smoothies and eat too much over time weight gain will happen.

Edited to add...Thanks for that Youtube link J72FIT!

You've gotten a lot of great answers/information but here's my two cents…I make smoothies a) because I like them b) as a way to get lots (3-4 cups) of dark leafy greens into my diet and c) as a way to eat my ground flaxseed.

I start with ground ice (from my ice maker), two tablespoons of ground flaxseed, one small banana, half a cup of frozen blueberries, a cup or more of water and three to four cups of raw spinach. If I "need" more calories or want "dairy" I add some greek yogurt. But usually no dairy. Just fruit, vegetables and flaxseed (with is my Super Food!). Enjoy!

I'm not much for smoothies because I hate cleaning the blender.

Rinse, fill halfway with hot water, blend for 15 sec, rinse again. Leave to dry. I can't think of anything in my kitchen that is easier to clean than the blender.

    THIS.
Some people like to use soap on their dishes and some blenders need the blade assembly removed for cleaning.

I use my Blendtec daily and mostly just rinse it because the dishwasher is too rough on the seals but I mostly just make smoothies for kids, not myself. They don't fill me up and they have a lot of calories, usually.

I LOVE smoothies for breakfast! I usually have a smoothie and some fruit for breakfast every day. I either buy the Naked store-bought ones that are all natural, or I make my own. My favorite on my own has greek yogurt, almond milk, mango, pineaple, banana, and greens. So yummy! I find that eating a piece of fruit with it, and sipping it throughout the morning, is enough to keep me from being hungry throughout the morning.
