Reading everything that is sticked on these forums are a good start.-1

The stickies are excellent. However, be discerning when you read through some of the threads that are not stickied. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
No food group is bad for you, unless you have an intolerance or have been told by your doctor not to eat certain things due to medical issues.
Sugar and carbohydrates are not the devil.
The only thing required to lose weight is to eat at a calorie deficit. What type of plan you choose to reach that calorie deficit is 100% preference. There are no magic diet programs at all, except those which might be magic for you.0 -

As far as the forums, I agree with everyone to read the stickies. As well as with SLLRunner to be discerning when reading the forums. People can be both overt and subtle when promoting woo and fad dieting.
Keep it simple. Don't complicate things or bite more than you can chew.0 -

and dietary fat isn't the devil either.0 -
Have your weight loss journey overseen by a doctor. Get (and follow!) good advice.
Have faith in yourself and be patient. It's a long journey.0 -
Weigh your foods, measure your liquids! This is the only scale you should allow to "rule" you.
Don't let the weight scale ruin you. It lies.
Take measurements! Take before and during pictures!
Count up your NSVs (Non Scale Victories).
Measure EVERYTHING, but realize that it's okay to cheat. It's okay to not log once in awhile. Just come back when you're done relaxing!0 -
you get out of it what you put into it. most important tip for MFP.0

Look for new foods that you like and to add to your diet. Look for alternatives to the things that you like and of course nothing has to be cut out completely.0
