While nature fused my spine from head to tail about the only work out I can do is walk. I yo yo'ed a lot when mainly eating carbs for years but now with 80% of diet fat and 5% carb I am slowly losing weight. This might not work in your case for many different factors. Read up and understand how any diet you select works and does not work. You will come up with a plan. Since at max seldom do even body builders add more than a pound of muscle a month so muscle build up is slow at best when eating fewer calories than one is actually burning.

The only advice to be acted upon from my experience. Rehab time can be time well spent.

Losing weight comes from a calorie defecit..you don't need fads, gimmicks or exercise

You just need to weigh and log your food and eat at a calorie defecit and follow your post operative care plan for any physio

As you recover you can clear exercise with the specialists who know your case and introduce exercise as you wish

I've had a spinal fusion myself on L5/S1 and a plethora of laminectomies. I started physical activity slowly with walking workouts (low-impact)/spine-centered yoga/stretching. If you can-check out "Viniyoga for the Low Back, Sacrum, and Hips." I also do "Yoga for Chronic Conditions." It helps with stiffness, pain, stress, and increases joint mobility without causing undo stress to your spine. PT can definitely help obviously, but for me it wasn't thee end all solution. There are definitely exercises/yoga poses you shouldn't do (.) unless you want to spend days in extreme pain and induce sciatica. Also you can google Mckenzie back exercises and check those out.

I broke my back and had lower spinal fusion. I put on a ton of weight over the first year, but have lost most of it this year. I walk and I swim....
